We're just back from Barcelona and the Seafood Expo Global (SEG24). As always, a whirlwind of seafood conversations, stakeholders, initiatives, conference sessions and most impressively exhibitors! We started the week with a team face-to-face core group meeting, where the big topics included our forthcoming public consultation, discussions on our ongoing beta trials as well as continuing ongoing conversations on governance, funding and staffing. Throughout the 3-day Seafood Expo (23-25 April) we had numerous meetings with new and existing partners, contacts and initiatives. The underlaying theme to all those conversations was small-scale fisheries and how to work collaboratively to enhance their visibility within spaces like these and generally in the global seafood market. We're most certainly tired but happy to say that after Barcelona we have many new and/or deepened collaborations, new opportunities and a to-do list to keep them all moving! Thanks to everyone who made time to meet and who has helped inspire and inform our next steps! #barcelona #seafood #SustainableFishing #Sustainability #OceanAction #FairTrade #OceanLover #MarineLife #Seafood #SocialResponsibility #SupplyChains #OurOceans #Fisheries #SmallScaleFisheries #EquitableOceans #CoastalCommunities #SustainableSeas #SmallScaleFishers #FoodTechnology

🐟Sardine Canning Plant (Vigo - Galicia🇪🇸, 1951). Located on Spain's northwest coast, Vigo's access to the Atlantic Ocean's rich fishing grounds made it a prime location for maritime industries🛥️. The canning industry began in the 1800s with new preservation techniques that allowed fish to be stored and transported long distances without spoiling. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vigo had become a major player in the global fish canning🥫 industry, specializing in tuna, sardines, and other seafood. The establishment of canneries transformed the local economy, providing jobs for thousands and fueling industrial growth. Key advancements included steam-powered machinery and improved packaging methods, increasing efficiency and product longevity. In the 20th century, Galicia became one of Europe’s leading fish processing regions. Vigo's canneries supplied both domestic and international markets, exporting canned fish to Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Despite modern challenges like competition and changes in fish stocks, Vigo🇪🇸 remains a central hub for the fish canning industry, balancing tradition with innovation. #Ilovemetalcans #doubleseam #canseaming #canning #cannedfood

Climate change is affecting agriculture in profound ways, even in France's prestigious wine regions. Here's a groundbreaking example from the picturesque Roannaise coast: 🍇 The Côte Roannaise region in the Loire department, is making history with the first-ever climate change-related revision request for its protected status producing its Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wines. What's an AOC? An Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, is a French certification granted to agricultural products from special geographical regions. It guarantees the origin and quality of a product, ensuring its unique characteristics are tied to its terroir and traditional production methods. Key points: 🇫🇷 This is the first climate change-related AOC revision request received by INAO (France's National Institute of Origin and Quality) in its history. 🌍 Climate change is making it increasingly difficult to produce the region's signature fruity and lively wines. 🍷 Winegrowers are seeking to revise their appellation area to favor cooler situations by considering plot orientation and altitude. Located between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon, the Côte Roannaise region spans 215 hectares across about ten villages, with vineyards on hillsides of granite soils up to 550 meters in altitude. This landmark case highlights how climate change is forcing even the most prestigious industries to adapt and a reminder of how all agriculture will need to consider the impact of our future climate. You can find more information about this development here: https://lnkd.in/epJUD3Vu and reach out to learn more the specific analysis finres has conducted on the impact of climate change on French viticulture. #ClimateChange #FrenchWine #AOC #WineIndustry #Adaptation

Vice-Chairman & Chief Sustainability Officer at Iberostar Group | Young Global Leader WEF | TIME100 Most Influential Climate Leader | Vice-Chair WTTC
We recently welcomed the incredible members of Aliança Kirimurê at our Iberostar Waves Bahia and Selection Praia de Forte Hotels in Brazil. This dedicated collective of fishers and shellfish-gatherers from Brazil's Baía de Todos os Santos region joined us to gain a deeper understanding of our framework for responsible purchasing of seafood products and to refine the logistics for purchasing community fishery products. Aliança Kirimurê supports more than 200 families, 75% of whom are women, enhancing the quality and sustainability of seafood available in the region, setting fair prices, and following sustainable fishing guidelines to promote social, human, and environmental development. Since 2022, our partnership has led to improvements in processing facilities and distribution channels, fostering a more sustainable fishing industry and increasing demand for responsible seafood. As a part of our Lifting up Local program, this collaboration is crucial in helping us reach our goal of sourcing 100% responsibly sourced seafood by 2025. Currently, we are at 83% globally and 50% in Brazil with a big push to move this target in 2024. By working closely with local producers we ensure legality and traceability of local seafood products, the maintenance of healthy stocks and provide access to markets for small-scale artisanal fishers. The partnership also includes promoting other Aliança products, such as crafts, that allow the community to have a source of income during the months of heavy rain when fishing isn’t possible. Important collaborations like these allows us to offer our guests authentic local flavors while positively impacting the livelihoods of those who depend on this vital industry. #SustainableSeafood #LiftingUpLocal #ResponsibleTourism #CommunityEmpowerment #AliançaKirimurê #Brazil

Great day today with meetings in County Durham and Northumberland. I love being on the road and talking about the work we are trying to do at Food and Drink North East and why building our membership base is critical to keeping us purpose-led, agile and independent. It can be tough work without top-level funding or support but there's nothing that inspires me more than talking about the opportunity we have to become a quality, food-producing area with an international reputation as an authentic #northeast region of gastronomy and hospitality. I've met with both the excellent North East Autism Society and Ad Gefrin The English Whisky Guild today and we talked about food, farming, skills, inclusivity, pigs, apples, English whisky, regional ambitions, heritage, history and provenance. Just my cup of tea. Talking to organisations with big plans and visions that challenge the status quo. It's been 6 years since my unforgettable academic trip to Northern Italy. Blessed - we got to spend some real time with Consorzio del formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano 🧀 cooperatives as well as small-scale balsamic producers in Modena. Learning and unravelling what makes Italy so special when it comes to farming, food and tradition. I still genuinely believe that the North East could be the Emilia Romagna of the UK. The key ingredients are all there. We just need the vision, belief and political will to see it as a reality and bake it into our long term future as a region. From circular economy to entrepreneurship, climate to public health - food and drink is, by some distance and, from a holistic perspective, the most important sector to our region, and it must take its place in a transformational industrial strategy. FADNE can help make that happen, we just need to be heard by the right people and given the right support. #northeast #foodanddrink #food #farming #foodheritage #history #foodculture #gastronomy #industrialstrategy Ian Pilkington Kevin Meikle Christopher Ferguson Morag Garden Jordan Rutherford Kim McGuinness Nick Kemp Henry Kippin

As the InnaSea Media team walked the trade show floors and sat in on panel discussions, we noticed a recurring theme: everyone was talking about the importance of "sharing fishermen's stories" and "amplifying the voices of farmers". But this exact group of people seemed to be absent from the rooms where these conversations were taking place. While these shows have historically catered to sales and marketing teams, we couldn't help but wonder, if we want fishermen and farmers stories to be at the centre of the overall "seafood story", then where are they? Are there ways that we as an industry can be doing more to include fishermen and farmers in these events and give them a voice on these stages? We think that answer is yes and that in doing so, the seafood industry serves to benefit greatly. Having each step of the supply chain represented in these arenas provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between those who are intimately familiar with the realities of harvesting and cultivating seafood and the broader industry stakeholders who may be more focused on sales, marketing, and distribution. The result is a more unified seafood industry and more authentic seafood story. What are your thoughts?
The seafood industry’s conference, tradeshow, and event season is in full swing, with SENA in Boston, SEG in Barcelona in the rearview mirror, and PME in Seattle set for November. The global representation of seafood companies is staggering when you walk the floor of these shows, but there’s one group of attendees that seems to be missing: fishermen and water farmers. #nationalfisherman #community
