The fact that you are reading this means that this article has reached you for a reason. You may be wondering about your or someone else's relationship with alcohol and other substances. This article can help you gain a better understanding of alcohol and other substances use; addiction; treatment; and recovery. Take this brief 15 Question Self-Assessment. See if alcohol or other substances might be a concern for you or for a loved one. 1.) Do you frequently use alcohol or other drugs by yourself? 2.) Has your tolerance increased? In other words, do you have to use more of the substance to reach your desired high? 3.) Do you find it hard to cut back on your drinking or drugging even though you've made a promise to yourself that you will? 4.) Do you find yourself using alcohol or other drugs more regularly, such as every weekend or every time you're with friends? 5.) Is there a history of alcoholism or drug addiction in your family? 6.) Have you ever tried to control your drinking or drug use by changing jobs, moving or ending a relationship? 7.) When you're drinking or drugging, do you do things that your later regret? 8.) Do you sometimes drink or use drugs for several days at a time? 9.) Are you purposefully mixing drugs, such as using marijuana or cocaine with alcohol? 10.) Have you been in trouble with the law because of your drinking or drugging? 11.) Has someone close to you ever said that you get drunk or high too often? Did that annoy you? 12.) Are you experiencing problems at work or at school because of your substance use? 13.) Do you turn to alcohol or other drugs to get away from problems at home or on the job? 14.) Do you believe that you have to drink or use drugs in order to have a good time? 15.) Have you ever had a black-out (having no recollection of what happened) while you were drinking or drugging? Even one "yes" answer is reason to be alert. If you are concerned, make the call. To your doctor, your mental health provider, your insurance company, your employee assistance program (EAP). Your school's student assistance program. You can also check for resources on-line, or in the yellow pages. Help is always available. And you are worth it!
