Can you guess if this photo was taken at the local CVS pharmacy or at a trade show in the Raritan Convention Center? Bingo. Walking through the crowded Satmar Business Expo today, there were hundreds of exhibitors, most filling their tables with brochures, candies, keychains, free pens, and colorful magnets. But one brilliant entrepreneur put out something else. Tylenol. After a whole day of circling the trade show floor, enduring loud noise, and talking at the top of my lungs, this is exactly what I needed. Two little round pills to take away my throbbing headache. I do not remember who gave me the complimentary mint candy or the paper clip in the shape of a toilet plunger -- but I do remember the Tylenol guy. He stood out. He understood me. He provided genuine value when I needed it most. The big, bold marketing takeaway? Think about what your target market actually needs. Put yourselves into their shoes. Figure out how you can connect with them. And you'll create a solution guaranteed to take away their headaches.

Retail is all about who you know. If you're a supplier, you try to form solid relationships with good vendors. If you're a vendor, you’re looking for great retailers. The cannabis industry is no different. To get into the market, brands and retailers need a venue to build connections so they have a better chance at surviving and thriving. One option is a trade show where organizers curate content to meet the market's current needs. That includes providing entrepreneurs the opportunities to meet the right people and access the right information. Trade shows have evolved since the legalization of cannabis, as the products are treated more as consumer packaged goods. Trade shows may start looking similar to other shows where vendors exhibit their items. (Think: The Fancy Food Show or The Natural Products Expo). In the latest episode of the CannaBiz Success Show, I sat down with George Jage, CEO of Jage Media, founder of the popular MJ Unpacked conferences for those operating within the cannabis industry. As a leader in the events space, George shared valuable insight into the importance of leveraging trade shows to form partnerships and how his team creates the ideal environment for these professional connections to occur. Often, events have no barrier to entry: anyone can buy a ticket and attend. But MJ Unpacked limits attendees to licensed operators with the title "manager" or higher and accredited, active investors in cannabis. This move means that everyone in the room is a decision-maker who is actively driving the industry forward, and attendees, like smaller business owners, can get a better shot at connecting with these more prominent industry players. "We want the pioneers," says George, "the people that are leading the charge in this industry and bringing them together in the most meaningful way to concentrate and create efficiency around their time to have the most meaningful conversations in the shortest period of time." If I’ve learned anything in my decade working with the cannabis industry, it’s that successful trade shows like CWCBExpo understand the culture and needs of the communities they serve. That’s because it’s one thing to have experience running trade shows, and a whole other to understand the industry you’re working in. Any trade show organizer needs to have their finger on the pulse of the industry they serve. You need to know the questions to ask, where to go for trends, and need to build a mental Rolodex of who’s who. This is especially true in cannabis, where trends move fast and businesses need to move even faster. One point it doesn't really cover is whether or not the pharmacy sees the group as a "good fit" for their business nor does it touch on a sense of "community" - do they feel like they belong to the group & have the ability to add value to it OR do they become another "anonymous number" and a slave to a generic strategy. This is a very interesting take on this technology, from my understanding it is used as a call to action for related products i.e. it would flash a full screen shot of Red Bull on a drinks cooler etc. thus influencing the shopper into red bull, the idea seems logical but it looks like the implementation isn't working here? maybe the advertising budgets have failed hence no call to action messages, I remember the same thing happening when large media screens were installed into Retail Stores the advertising dried up as brand owners failed to see the return. Maybe there's a better way to use technology e.g. link with loyalty data and mobile phone/ near field tech etc.
