🔍 Unlocking health equity: understanding the impact of social determinants Dr Linda Harris joined Andrew Laird on this recent #RadicalReformers episode to discuss Spectrum Community Health CIC's role at the forefront of tackling the wider determinants of health faced by vulnerable people. Linda and Andrew discuss the importance of early interventions in tackling health inequalities and the compounding reasons why vulnerable people don’t get the same outcomes compared to their age-related peers. Linda shares insights into the impact of adverse childhood experiences on the way vulnerable people access care. I recently got to interview Dr. Madeleine Ballard on our podcast. Dimagi is an active partner to Community Health Impact Coalition which she leads and it was reinvigorating to discuss how we can unlock universal health coverage by professionalizing Community Health Workers (CHWs). My top takeaways: - For CHWs to thrive, they must be: Salaried, Skilled, Supervised and Supplied - CHWs embedded in their communities can transform the increasingly transactional nature of healthcare, bringing healthcare back to its essence of human connection rooted in trust.  - Technology isn't neutral. As technologists, we should ensure our tools are supportive, not extractive. - Before introducing AI to optimize CHWs work, let's first maximize the incredible potential of CHWs. - According to the CHIC dashboard, only 34 of 137 countries pay and accredit CHWs. Countries leading the CHW movement have a few things in common: Strong political will; active involvement of female CHWs; adequate financial backing for salaried programs; and an evidence-based approach for continuous improvement. Lastly, as Dr. Madeleine Ballard rightly said, "If you're not at the table, you're on the menu."
