Seeing your great friends in the news is always amazing, especially when they tirelessly advocate for improving #healthcare workers' mental health and doing amazing, impactful things. As featured in Fierce Healthcare, Dr. Stefanie Simmons, MD FACEP - Chief Medical Officer of Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation, and her team have been working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an "Impact Wellbeing" field guide for #hospital CEOs and leaders. “We know hospital leaders have a lot of competing demands and it can be overwhelming to know where to start when working to improve professional wellbeing,” Stefanie Simmons, M.D., chief medical officer of the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation, said in a release. “The guide provides hospital leaders across the country the tools for putting together a more cohesive wellbeing strategy, allowing them to take stock of where they are now, highlighting some of the missing pieces, and taking action to get to where they want to be.” The guide includes the following steps healthcare systems can take: 1. Conduct a review of your hospital’s operations to determine how they support professional wellbeing. 2. Build a dedicated team to support professional wellbeing at your hospital. 3. Remove barriers to seeking care, such as intrusive mental health questions on credentialing applications. 4. Develop a suite of communication tools that help you share updates with your workforce about your hospital’s journey to improve professional wellbeing. 5. Integrate professional wellbeing measures into an ongoing quality improvement project. 6. Create a 12-month plan to continue to move your hospital’s professional wellbeing work forward. Check out the free guide here: https://lnkd.in/d-JyWTCX Also, while you are at it, encourage Congress to reauthorize and expand the Dr. Lorna Breen Healthcare Provider Protection Act which will provide another 5 years of funding for critical programs and grants to study burnout, wellness, and suicide prevention for clinicians. #physicians #hospitals #wellness Envision Healthcare J. "Benefits of Workplace Health Promotion for the Company and employees" The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the workplace a priority setting for health promotion in the 21st century. Like other settings where WHO has developed health-promoting initiatives (schools, cities, hospitals, marketplaces), the workplace can have a very positive impact on the health and well-being of workers, their families, communities and society at large. However, in spite of demonstrated benefits, current workplace health promotion (WHP) efforts reach a limited number of workplaces and workers around theworld. WHP includes a variety of policies and activities in the workplace that are designed to help employers and employees at all levels to increase control over and improve their health. WHP involves the participation of employees, management and other stakeholders in the implementation of jointly agreed initiatives for the health and well-being of the workforce. While some health promotion activities in the workplace tend to focus on a single illness or risk factor (e.g. prevention of heart disease) or on changing personal health practices (e.g. smoking, diet), there is a growing appreciation for the multiple determinants of workers' health. In addition to person-focused interventions, WHP initiatives have moved toward a more comprehensive approach, which acknowledges the combined influence of personal, environmental, organizational, community and societal factors on employee well-being. Work and Mental Health in the Healthcare System Working in the healthcare system is both rewarding and demanding. Healthcare professionals are on the front lines, caring for patients and often making life-changing decisions. While this work brings immense fulfillment, it also comes with significant mental and emotional challenges that can affect one's mental health. The Pressure of Responsibility: Healthcare workers constantly face high expectations—whether it's saving lives, providing emotional support to patients and families, or dealing with the pressures of long hours and heavy workloads. This responsibility can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout, especially when resources are limited or when patient outcomes don’t meet expectations. Emotional Labor: Healthcare professionals often form bonds with their patients, which makes it hard when they witness suffering or loss. This emotional labor, when combined with the demands of the job, can lead to compassion fatigue, where individuals feel emotionally drained and struggle to maintain empathy. This can further impact their overall well-being. Work-Life Balance: In healthcare, the line between work and personal life can blur. The unpredictability of emergencies, on-call hours, and the sheer volume of work can make it difficult for healthcare workers to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Without proper rest and time for self-care, mental health can suffer, leading to fatigue and reduced job satisfaction. Stigma and Support: Despite growing awareness of mental health, there is still a stigma around seeking help within the healthcare community. Many professionals feel that acknowledging their mental health struggles might be seen as a weakness or affect their careers. This prevents many from seeking the support they need, even though they are providing that very care to others. The Path Forward: Addressing mental health in the healthcare system requires a cultural shift. Encouraging open conversations about mental health, providing access to counseling and wellness programs, and promoting work environments where professionals feel supported are critical steps. Healthcare workers need time to rest, recharge, and seek help without fear of judgment. Ultimately, taking care of the mental health of healthcare professionals isn’t just about individual well-being—it's essential for the overall health of the healthcare system. A mentally healthy workforce is better equipped to provide high-quality care, fostering a more sustainable, compassionate environment for both staff and patients.

➡ Reduced access to NHS services and an inability to get time off for treatment is contributing to employee absence, according to research. ➡ With health conditions going untreated for longer, it is no surprise that the cost of workplace absence is a growing concern. ➡ Long term data has identified that the underlying cause of staff absence and health claims are related to wellbeing issues such as excess weight, inactivity and other lifestyle behaviours in the vast majority of cases.
