Liver Cirrhosis: Causes, Symptoms, and the Impact on Health. Cirrhosis is a chronic condition in which the liver is slowly damaged over time, leading to the replacement of healthy tissue with scar tissue. This scarring prevents the liver from performing vital functions, such as detoxifying the blood and producing essential proteins. Common causes of cirrhosis include chronic alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Early symptoms are often subtle, but as the disease progresses, patients may experience fatigue, jaundice, and fluid buildup in the abdomen. Understanding cirrhosis is essential for prevention and management of liver health. https://lnkd.in/ec3_6ZKw #LiverCirrhosis #Hepatology #MedicalEducation

🌍 Today on World Liver Day, let's spotlight an increasingly common health issue affecting millions globally: fatty liver disease. Recent studies highlight that up to 25% of the world's population is grappling with this condition, which is primarily driven by rising obesity and diabetes rates (BMJ Open). Fatty liver disease, which encompasses both alcoholic (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), can lead to serious complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer if not managed properly. The prevalence of NAFLD alone has seen a significant rise, doubling from 391.2 million cases in 1990 to 882.1 million in 2017 (BMJ Open). According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is: 🌍 44.37% in Latin America 🌍 33.07% in Southeast Asia 🌍 31.20% in North America 🌍 25.10% in Western Europe Addressing this growing epidemic requires awareness and lifestyle modifications. Healthy eating, regular physical activity, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption are crucial preventive measures. Carbon beads reduce liver disease progression 👉 Liver is permanently damaged in cirrhosis as scar tissue replaces healthy tissue and prevents normal function. 👉 Risk factors: Alcohol-associated liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis C and chronic hepatitis B. 👉 Symptoms include jaundice, pruritus, digestive difficulties, small yellow bumps of fat deposits on skin or eyelids and hepatic encephalopathy 👉 Blood tests, imaging tests, biopsy show liver damage or infections. 👉 Treatment prevents worsening of disease and liver failure 👉 Harmful gut bacteria release endotoxins which increase the leakiness in gut 👉 Leaching of endotoxins result in liver inflammation 👉 Recent study showed innovative carbon beads taken orally could absorb endotoxins, restores gut health and prevent disease progression Source: Liu J et al. The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a crucial role in maintaining various aspects of cell homeostasis and integrity. This oligomeric protein complex assembles in response to both exogenous and endogenous danger signals. Moreover, it has been associated with the pathogenesis of numerous disease conditions, especially chronic inflammatory diseases. #NLRP3 #inflammasome

Most liver disease is preventable – over 90% of deaths are due to 3 main risk factors: alcohol, viral hepatitis and obesity. That’s why we’re offering #ResearchFunding for projects on liver disease, and are particularly interested in those which will explore health inequalities, behavioural interventions, identification strategies, hepatitis, paediatrics and non-alcohol related fatty liver. I am delighted to have to share my article on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is featured in the esteemed Dinakaran newspaper. In recent times, there has been a growing awareness about NAFLD and I am very happy to see this conscious liver health awareness, especially of this often-undiagnosed condition. Increasing awareness is the first step toward effective prevention and management, so take care of your liver health. Though fatty liver may sound very common, it is very serious. It has become so prevalent that NAFLD can be found in children these days. Once liver diseases were exclusive to older adults, but now liver diseases in children have become a growing concern as there will be no showing of symptoms for NAFLD disease. So early diagnosis is crucial to prevent further serious liver complications. With great satisfaction, I feel happy about my contribution to the ongoing dialogue surrounding NAFLD and empowering individuals and their children to safeguard their liver health proactively. https://lnkd.in/gmJ3rDE2 #NAFLD #LiverHealth #PublicHealth #dinakaran #awareness

A new review in JAMA highlights key findings and clinical messages from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), the largest women’s health study in the United States. The WHI is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and was created to study factors that may reduce risks for cardiovascular disease, cancer, hip fractures, and other conditions in postmenopausal women. More than 68,000 women enrolled in clinical trials between 1993 and 1998 and were followed for up to 20 years. After reviewing these long-term data, the researchers explain the primary findings: For postmenopausal women, the WHI randomized clinical trials do not support menopausal hormone therapy to prevent cardiovascular disease or other chronic diseases. The WHI study found that estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progestin, two types of hormone replacement therapies, had varying outcomes with chronic conditions, and the evidence does not support the use of these therapies to reduce risks for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and dementia. Menopausal hormone therapy is appropriate to treat bothersome vasomotor symptoms among women in early menopause, without contraindications, who are interested in taking hormone therapy. The WHI evidence does not support routine supplementation with calcium plus vitamin D for menopausal women to prevent fractures or a low-fat diet with increased fruits, vegetables, and grains to prevent breast or colorectal cancer. A potential role of a low-fat dietary pattern in reducing breast cancer mortality, a secondary outcome, warrants further study. Ayurveda may be ideally positioned to address women's health concerns due to its holistic approach, which considers the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Its emphasis on personalized treatments, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle modifications aligns well with the multifaceted nature of women's health issues; especially during physiological transition.Ayurveda has the potential to become a valuable mainstream approach for enhancing women's well-being.
