August witnessed anti-Muslim and anti-immigrants riots across the UK, sparked by misinformation about the perpetrator of the murder of 3 young girls. This came amidst wider Islamophobia in general election campaign narratives and in political parties. Muslims also remain the most targeted group in religiously aggravated hate crimes. Joining me on Experts’ Dispatch to discuss Islamophobia in the UK was Professor Tahir Abbas, who spoke about the following: - The definition of Islamophobia, of which there remains no official one in the UK - The root causes of the riots beyond the misinformation, which extend to discontent with poverty, policing and housing - Whether things will be different under the new Labour govt, after failures under successive Tory govts, and what strategies should be employed to tackle Islamophobia Watch the full video here: youtu.be/mpmYIjh1VdU

FYI, #Canadian LIF in particular, #Canadians overall -- among others: As this has crucial implications and ramifications well beyond "political partisanship" for #Canada's national security "domestically" & otherwise, inside and outside the House of Commons, Parliament Hill, and foremost, federal elections, past &/or future, as well as "on the ground" from coast to coast to coast ... In sum, "MUST WATCH" -- & share widely, from my POV, for any/all constituent-citizen-taxpayers concerned about the vitality and integrity of our country's #bodypolitic -- CBC News #PowerandPolitics' Q&A #analysis with 2 former #CSIS directors, and #PnP's #PowerPanel members: "'Trudeau: Some Conservative parliamentarians involved in foreign interference | Power & Politics' 'Two former CSIS directors react to the prime minister's testimony at the foreign interference inquiry, where he claimed to know of specific Conservative parliamentarians who are involved in interference. Plus, the Power Panel breaks down how the fight over the Conservative leader's refusal to get security clearance turned the inquiry into a political arena." #politicalparties #leaders #parliamentarians #foreigninterference #securityclearance #leadership #nationalsecurity #accountability #responsibility #transparency #societalvalues #ethicsmatter #TOpoli #ottpoli #onpoli #cdnpoli #globalpoli #globalimpact

In 2023 it became abundantly clear that democracy is now a contested territory. In 2024, civil society keeps pushing for free and fair elections, for people to have the information they need, for accurate vote counting, for losers to accept defeat and for winners to govern for the common good. The Knesset is Israel’s national legislature and is the primary body responsible for making the country’s laws. Located in Jerusalem, the Knesset has 120 members, known as MKs (Members of the Knesset), elected for four-year terms through a proportional representation system. This setup allows a variety of political parties to gain seats, often leading to coalition governments, as no single party typically wins an outright majority. The Knesset’s responsibilities include passing laws, supervising the government, and approving budgets. It operates through committees that focus on foreign affairs, defence, finance, and social issues, allowing detailed discussion and review before decisions are made on the floor. It also has powers to check the executive branch by questioning ministers, approving the Prime Minister, and holding votes of no-confidence, which can lead to new elections. Founded in 1949, the Knesset embodies Israel’s parliamentary democracy, and its structure encourages multi-party representation, making it a dynamic and sometimes complex institution central to Israel’s political life. #Knesset #Israel #Democracy _____________________________________________________________________________ Follow our other social media accounts: https://lnkd.in/eHkgWaRs

So it appears that almost every Western Democracy is in the process of electing right wing government's, and in several cases very far right governments. But the UK is predicted to elect a centrist left wing socialist government. How can that be? How can the UK be so far out of step with the rest of global politics? What does the UK electorate know that the rest of the world doesn't? Why is the UK zigging when the rest of the world is zagging? Is the UK just far ahead of the rest of global politics, or just far behind, or generally out of step with global political opinion? Socialist left wing ideologies seem so far removed from the reality of what is actually happening in everyone's lives. #eyeseew
