Nice work Governor Glenn Youngkin and team, for signing an executive order to restrict student cell phone usage in public schools across Virginia. This decisive action is a significant step towards fostering healthier screen habits and prioritizing the mental health of our young generation. You can learn more about Compass Health Center's work in Maryland and Virginia here: https://lnkd.in/emkABwz This initiative follows the Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy's recent calls for social media platforms to include health warnings for young users, addressing the mental health crisis linked to excessive screen time. Northern Virginia public schools enforce new cellphone policy "Several school districts in Northern Virginia are cracking down on cellphone use during school hours, citing concerns over distractions and mental health impacts on students." Distractions ... maybe. Empirical data please. Are we supposed to see improved grades? What are we looking to improve in the school? Mental Health? Sorry but the schools cannot measure this or report on this in any meaningful way. So this is useless to discuss imo ... other than in "feelings". #education #adolescentdevelopment #mentalhealth #socialmedia https://lnkd.in/ezyYvGRf

This should make an intereting 'experiment'. I hope they take lots of eary baseline data so we can compare pre and post with relative confidence in the reulsults. We do not need more lousy, confounding data. I do think the article only refers to the expert opinion labeling social media as the cause of drops in mental health. I refer to my post to other experts who are less convinced. https://lnkd.in/e5anRcHV Arkansas tries banning phones in schools https://flip.it/q5REdi

Student mental health services are becoming a core offering at schools across the country. This article offers a great example of what holistic student health programming looks like: a combination of formal interventions, peer support programs, and education on self-care. The biggest obstacle to cultivating such ecosystems lies in staffing. More than anything, we need a larger workforce of mental health professionals who are ready to support students holistically and attentively. #StudentMentalHealth #MentalHealth #SchoolPrograms #SelfCare #Therapists

Parents are keenly aware of the distractions and the mental health issues associated with smartphones and social media, but teachers say they might not realize how much those struggles play out at school. While parents are not solely to blame for school cellphone issues, they can help, by not sending their child stream-of-consciousness questions which add to a climate of constant interruption and distraction from learning. And parents can tell their kids not to text home unless it is urgent. And if they do, ignore it. School is a place for focusing on learning and developing independence. Parents can still reach out to their child if there is a change in plans or a family emergency by contacting the school's front office. And, the child also should go to the school's front office for emergencies, and the office can contact the parents. Think of it this way, would a parent go to a child's school and ask for their child to be pulled out of calculus to tell them something not important?

Voluntary, chronic absenteeism is a trend I've witnessed as a parent at the K-12 level, as a college professor, and also in workplaces. This article talks about the learning losses, but also the connection between isolation and mental health, and the erosion of relationships (for kids and adults alike) when people don't spend time with each other. The comments on the article are interesting too. I'm curious if others have felt this same impact and/or seen schools or organizations successfully turn this trend around? https://lnkd.in/gxd6xiDK

Teachers, how many times during the course of a lesson do you ask students to put their phones away? In my new book I share my thoughts including the impact on students mental health. “Personally, I find myself in a complex web of emotions when I contemplate the prospect of an outright ban on smartphones in school.” Transforming Schools” (p 73) Read my position and let’s have a conversation on the issue. #MentalHealth #TraumaInformedSchools #BrainWork #Change #Education

Fascinating innovation in education! 📚📱 I just read about a London school piloting a 12-hour day to combat phone addiction and "give children their childhood back." Key points: - 7am-7pm school day for 11-13 year olds - Phones off for entire 12 hours - Breakfast, dinner, homework time, and fun activities included - Only £10/week for families - Early results show improved behaviour and academics What stands out: - Bold approach to screen time issues - Focus on social skills and "real" interactions - Holistic view of education beyond academics - Affordable for a high-deprivation area This experiment raises intriguing questions: - Could this model work elsewhere? - How might it impact family dynamics? - What are the long-term effects on students? As we navigate education in the digital age, initiatives like this are crucial to watch. What are your thoughts on this approach? #Education #Innovation #DigitalWellbeing Link to article: https://lnkd.in/e8xQaAXB
