Throwback to the insightful keynote presentation at STEP Canada | The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (Canada) Canada-USA Cross-border Conference in Chicago where Crysalia co-founder Patricia Saputo shared her expertise on building high-performing cross-border teams in client-focused business environments! As co-founder and chairperson of Crysalia Inc. and a member of the Saputo family, Patricia provided valuable insights on how advisers and clients can work together to navigate the complexities of cross-border estates. She broke it down from three perspectives: The client: the one in charge of settling an estate, with all the best intentions, but who may not know the rules of the game and is expected to be the captain of the team. The adviser: the one with all the knowledge of the rules of the game, but who may not fully understand the culture of the team (client/family), and who has to equip the client with the necessary understanding to make adequate decisions for moving forward. The other players on the team: the ones who trust the captain to help the team meet their common objective in the face of uncertainty. Through a compelling case study on settling large, cross-border estates, Patricia highlighted how professionals can empower their clients to ensure successful outcomes in the face of challenges. "How do you know if your leadership will outlast your tenure?" That was the question I asked myself after stepping down recently as L’azurde’s CEO, ending a 14-year journey that will be a highlight in my career. I found myself reflecting on the incredible ride we have shared with the organization and the Board to transform L'azurde into a dynamic leader in the jewelry industry, marked by continuous innovation and expansion into new ventures. Yet, as a leader, I wondered: Would L’azurde thrive beyond my leadership? Had we built a foundation strong enough to stand without me? Would the culture, systems, and values endure or fade away? Last week, I got my answer. L’azurde was recognized among the top-ranked non-financial companies on Tadawul for corporate governance excellence - a distinction awarded by Alfaisal University’s Corporate Governance Center. This recognition isn’t just about profits or market share. It reflects the pillars of trust, transparency, and sustainability - principles that keep organizations thriving long after leadership transitions. Stepping down has taught me this: Your legacy isn’t measured by short-term achievements but by the systems, culture, and processes you leave behind. What I Focused On to Ensure L’azurde’s Enduring Success: Have a Clear North Star: Articulate a strong vision and communicate it relentlessly across the organization. Empower the Right People: Hire for values, leadership, and capability—and give them ownership. Embed Governance into Culture: Governance isn’t compliance; it’s about trust. Fair processes matter more than outcomes. Pursue Continuous Innovation: Relentlessly improve products, processes, and business models, staying agile and adaptable. Think Long-Term, Act Today: Success lies in the perfect execution of long-term plans. Poor execution, not poor strategy, is where most companies fail. L’azurde’s award proves that these principles work. I step away knowing that we’ve built something enduring - a company where governance, innovation, and excellence form the bedrock of its success. This is a very similar feeling to when I stepped down from my CEO role at Red Bull North America which continued to grow, and shine post my 12-year tenure at Red Bull.
