The multicultural youth GOTV guide that my colleague Henry A.J. Ramos I have been working on has been released! While it is focused on California youth-serving nonprofits, it is mostly transferable to other states. Consult the The Democracy Capacity Project voter assistance guide for your state for supplemental information. The guide is geared towards helping nonprofits turn out young voters of color, but the its recommendations are applicable for GOTV generally. If you work for any nonprofit with a client base, here are two things you can do this year to turn them out to vote: 1. Make sure they are registered to vote! Census data indicates that about 80% of persons who register to vote in a presidential election year actually go out and vote. This is likely because of all the television, radio, and social media messaging that takes place  combined with having just recently having registered. In a sense, new voters in a presidential election year have a GOTV campaign aimed at them from a number of sources. So if you can only do one thing this year, make sure your clients get registered to vote this year. (N.B., we only see this phenomenon during a presidential election year.) 2. If you can only do two things this year, make sure to remind your clients to vote and let them know that their vote matters and they are making a difference! Recent research on voter turnout shows that nonprofit clients are particularly receptive to nonpartisan GOTV campaigns supported by nonprofits they have worked with, and that their turnout rates increase significantly when they are encouraged to vote by those nonprofits. Nonprofit engagement can improve the turnout rates across all categories of voters, and has been shown to make significant improvements in turnout rates for young voters, voters of color, and low-income voters. Improving turnout rates attracts the attention of political campaigns that focus on high-propensity voters. This attention in turn engages voters further and encourages even higher turnout. National Volunteer Week (April 21-27) Serving in your #community and #volunteering are powerful ways to make a positive impact on the world around you. By dedicating your time and skills to helping others, you can create meaningful change, foster connections and contribute to the well-being of those in need. While National Volunteer Week kicks off April 21, VA invites everyone in the community to explore ways to give back to Veterans any time of the year. In addition, #Veterans can explore volunteer opportunities as part of VetServe 2024, which encourages Veterans to become volunteers to support other Veterans. On April 24, 2024, join #VA in supporting a National Day of Service through VetServe 2024. #VetServe is a celebration of service and a call-to-action aimed to encourage the nation’s 19 million Veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors to serve in their community. Did you know 🤷♂️ 🙌In Fiscal Year 2023, 25,403 active volunteers contributed more than 3.2 million hours of service to Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors at VA medical facilities across the country. Additionally, these individuals, along with community partners generously donated more than $81.1 million to VA, supporting critical programs and essential services that have a lasting and positive impact on Veterans. 🤯 There were 25,403 volunteers on VA’s rolls during FY 2023, contributing a total of more than 3.2 million hours of service. It would require 1,565 Full Time Equivalents (FTE) to cover the workload of CDCE volunteers. 🎯#CDCE volunteers and their organizations contributed more than $81.1 million in gifts and donations in FY 2023 for a combined total value of over $112.4 million in volunteer service and giving. 🤜🤛Monetary estimates aside, it is impossible to calculate the amount of caring and sharing these CDCE volunteers provide to Veteran patients. #NationalVolunteerWeek #VA #Volunteers #Community #VetServe

April is National Volunteer Month (in the US). Here are 9 simple prompts to tell your volunteer stories. April is a fitting time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of those who give time, ideas, talent, and energy to our organization. And the impact they make on your community. You may be hosting a volunteer appreciation event or sending hand-written thank yous. Consider also highlighting the stories of volunteers in your force by asking one of these 9 simple prompts: 1. What first inspired you to volunteer with our mission? 2. What one memory or moment of volunteering sticks out most? 3. Recall the first time you volunteered. How did it make you feel? 4. Describe in 3 words what being a part of our organization means to you. 5. How has your life been impacted by volunteering with our organization?  6. Share your favorite project you worked on or fundraiser you organized. 7. What’s the biggest impact you think our work will have in 10 years? 8. What's the biggest hope you have for our community? 9. Why is our mission meaningful to you? Then ask staff to share what they appreciate most about the volunteers who support your mission. Turn these into beautiful video compilations. Ask 10 people to say "thank you" and weave them all together into one piece.
