"Volunteers are like trees with deep roots in their nonprofit organizations," said Yifan Yu, assistant professor of information, risk, and operations management at Texas McCombs School of Business, United States. "The more connections or 'roots' volunteers have with each other in different social layers, like communities and schools, the more likely they are to continue volunteering." Yu and co-authors Jane Tan of Southern Methodist University and Yong Tan of the University of Washington used a Chinese crowdsourcing platform from the Beijing Volunteer Service Federation to analyze the volunteer activity of 827,260 Beijing-area residents from 2011 to 2019. Among their findings: • Volunteers were more likely to continue volunteering at a nonprofit organization, and to volunteer more frequently, if they had connections to the people there. • Those with multiple connections—such as overlapping work, neighborhood, or schooling ties—were 27% more likely to remain involved than those with a single connection. Check out this approach to building cross-sector partnerships - a critical component of a multi-racial inclusive democracy.
With over 15 years of working with local governments and nonprofits, we have has seen many local nonprofits lead a community’s welcoming efforts. Many of these advocates have built community-wide welcoming infrastructure even when they’ve been unable to engage local government leaders. But to truly reach everyone, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠. With these considerations, Welcoming America hosted “Building a Bigger Table: An Organizing and Advocacy Learning Lab” in 2023 to equip local nonprofit leaders and other champions of welcoming with the advocacy and organizing skills needed to bring local government to the table and work together. Chasing Success: the Challenge for Nonprofits calls for improved collaboration among nonprofit programs and for strengthened community systems, including more cooperative thinking and action not only among those funding and implementing programs but also among those setting policy, conducting research and engaging communities as partners in change. Today, far too often, nonprofit programs compete for resources and visibility--- without a focus on cooperation and the funding to sustain collaboration, there could be good programs but not the centrality to take what has been learned, scale the initiative and serve more people---with quality and validated outcomes. Interdisciplinary partners could include, for example, business schools, community leaders, political scientists and housing experts based upon the problem that the organization is trying to solve--the content of the work will provide guidance.

As the 2024 Election nears, make sure your nonprofit has policies in place to support civic engagement, such as paid time off to vote and serve as poll workers. Feel free to use MANP's policy as a template to adapt for your organization. Additional sample policies are available from Nonprofit Staff Vote. More importantly, review these policies with staff so they know their options. https://lnkd.in/ek6mwYkF
