Among the 18 million veterans in the U.S., less than half are enrolled in VA healthcare, with only 6 million actively using these services. Jenn Kerfoot, a former Navy corpsman and current Chief Strategy & Growth Officer at DUOS, unpacks in a recent article featured on STAT the bureaucratic maze veterans face post-service, from shocking statistics to sobering realities. The suicide rate for veterans stands alarmingly at 72% higher than that of non-veteran adults, reflecting a deep and pressing need for better access to mental health and medical care. In the article, Jenn advocates for systemic changes to bridge this gap, including automatic VA enrollment for all honorably discharged veterans, streamlined communications between health agencies, and a simplification of the processes that currently hinder veterans from receiving the care they deserve. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g7cm94Kv As part of our ongoing support for our veterans, DUOS is proud to partner with Humana in a newly launched initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare experiences through technology, improving access and outcomes. This meaningful partnership reaffirms our commitment and dedication to improving the well-being of our veteran communities. 🇺🇸 #VeteranHealth #VeteranCare #HonorOurVeterans #Veterans #Healthcare #SuicidePrevention

It is no surprise that most veterans go on to thrive after leaving military service. These men and women are trained to succeed, and they often do. Anyone who has gone through a big change recently will know that the short-term phase is often the easiest to overcome. These changes are small and mainly transactional. However, the long-term emotional adjustments can be much harder to navigate. These transformational changes can lead us to feel lost, disconnected, and with a diminished sense of purpose. Without support, these challenges can escalate into issues that are far more complex. Despite their unrivalled skills and excellent personal qualities, some veterans will need assistance with this. Inevitably, some will also be facing challenges uniquely associated with military service. In collaboration with the NHS, Walking With The Wounded empowers veterans and their families by reigniting their sense of purpose. Through our Mental Health, Employment, and Care Coordination programmes, we can ensure that **ALL** veterans thrive after leaving service, not just the majority. Have you signed your GP practice up to become Veteran Friendly Accredited? Our recently commissioned study of nearly 5,000 veterans found that 55% of them have experienced a mental or physical health issue potentially related to their service since leaving the armed forces. Despite this, one in seven veterans (14%) who have experienced service-related issues have not sought help from a healthcare professional, meaning thousands may be silently struggling. Our findings show that almost two-thirds (63%) of veterans would be more likely to seek help for any issues they might experience if they knew their GP practice was Veteran Friendly Accredited. The Veteran Friendly Accreditation scheme is a quick-to-implement, free support programme that sends a strong signal to veteran patients. Getting accredited only takes 20 minutes and will enable you and your practice team to easily identify, understand and support veterans. Where appropriate, signing up can also help you refer them to specialist healthcare services designed especially for veterans - improving health and wellbeing outcomes and saving you time by reducing repeat appointments and shortening waiting times for diagnosis and treatments. Veteran Friendly practices could encourage thousands of military veterans who may be silently struggling with their health to seek help. Join the 3,000+ practices who are already Veteran Friendly. Rural Healthcare: New initiatives aim to improve care for the 4.7M veterans in rural areas. Legislative Efforts: Congress is pushing to protect benefits and secure a 2025 cost-of-living adjustment.
