At Concerned Friends, we're deeply troubled by recent media reports highlighting the plight of Ontario families facing hospital bills when seniors refuse unsuitable long-term care placements. Here's our take:
1️⃣ Every individual deserves the right to choose their care with confidence. We advocate for a wide array of safe, high-quality options that respect personal preferences and cultural needs.
2️⃣ To ensure trust in long-term care, robust inspection systems are crucial. All facilities must meet or exceed standards, providing peace of mind for residents and their loved ones.
3️⃣ While we acknowledge the strain on hospital resources, the key to post-hospital care lies in diverse options. In addition to long-term care homes, these options should include home care, respite beds, small homes, group homes, and hospice. We support solutions that offer tailored support and faster implementation.
4️⃣ If Bill 7 is used to move individuals to homes not of their choosing, they must receive priority for their preferred homes when space becomes available. No one should be forced into a care home against their wishes without the promise of prompt transfer to their preferred choice.
Let's work together for a caring, respectful, and responsive system for all Ontarians.
