"I make a difference just by being there, by talking to people... and being sympathetic. There are times where people are poorly and they just want to talk to a different person – not their family – or they just want you to be there and hold their hand. "I volunteer basically because I like to help people do things... and I like to make people happy. My skills are talking to people, so that's why I did it. I thoroughly enjoy it and it passes my time – it gives me a purpose to get out of bed some mornings." These are the words of Tony, a volunteer on our Inpatient Unit. A typical day sees him making tea and coffee for patients, and being a listening ear to them. To anyone thinking about volunteering, he added: "I would say think about it for 30 seconds and then go and do it, because you’ll find you will get so much reward and pleasure from it. I know I have, and I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t." As well as the Inpatient Unit, there are a variety of other opportunities to volunteer for Garden House Hospice Care, either through corporate volunteering or as an individual. yet2 had a great time volunteering at More Than Words. We sorted through more than 1,400 books, working alongside the young adult coordinators who work at More Than Words “to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.” More Than Words works with some of the most vulnerable young adults in Greater Boston: those who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school. At More Than Words the young adults have a paying job that teaches them job skills, interpersonal skills, etc. while receiving focused support to ensure they persist in school and create plans for their future. #givingback #volunteering

Thanksgiving is a time when families come together to celebrate what they’re grateful for. For many foster-involved kids, this holiday can be bittersweet. 🍁🦃 They may feel grateful for the new family they have been welcomed into, but may also feel sad and loss at not being able to spend the holiday with their birth family. Here’s some ways to make foster-involved children feel welcome: Help Children to Verbalize What They're Feeling: This time of year can be tough for foster kids. It's important to let them express their feelings and validate those feelings. Include Children In Your Family Traditions: Foster kids may feel like they are outsiders looking in on other families' traditions. Show them that they are part of the family by including them in your own traditions! Prepare A Thoughtful Thanksgiving Meal That Makes Them Feel Special: For many kids in foster care, food is one of the only constants in their lives. Make sure they have a special Thanksgiving meal and include some of their favorite dishes on the menu. If you're not sure what their favorites are, ask! Yet, they face challenges that most of us cannot even imagine. In our bustling lives, we often seek moments of relaxation and tranquility. We plan trips, book vacations and look forward to escaping the routine. However, there is a way to find true fulfillment and relaxation that goes beyond mere recreation: spending a day with tribal or orphaned children who desperately need our support. Imagine gathering your colleagues and friends, not for a usual outing, but for a meaningful day dedicated to bringing joy and support to these children. Just one day can make a world of difference in their lives and leave your heart feeling fulfilled and content. Many corporate organizations pride themselves on their contributions to society. Yet, these efforts often remain concentrated within urban areas. It's time to extend our helping hands to the suburban, hillside and remote village regions where help is desperately needed. By reaching out to these areas, we can ensure that our efforts truly make a difference where they are needed most. So many of us pray for good fortune and wish for a happy life. Dear Volunteers, You are truly appreciated always but here are a few things to take into consideration. We understand that volunteering is a selfless act but remembering, what is worth doing; is worth doing well. When on the field, do well to drop any assumed/borrowed or inborn “ajeboism”, you are out to work, you are most likely to get dirty on the field. - you need to drop your phones and do the needful. Phones can be distracting. Remember, the outreach or project is just for few hours. You can do it! There will always be time to take pictures and make videos. - if you’re a first timer, on getting to a location for an outreach, mix up with others. Ask questions, know where and how to fit in. Get involved. It’s all for impact. - DRESS APPROPRIATELY (read this over again). Thank you! Another important fact to put into consideration, - You may be visiting places that will provoke your emotions, PLEASE, control your tear glands. We understand empathy but we need to encourage those we are visiting. So no tears baby girl. Hug it out 🤗 We love you and we appreciate every second you sacrifice to make great change and impact.
