How do you get innovations and new evidence implemented in a busy healthcare system? Because, "you can spend billions of dollars of #research, but it doesn’t matter a sausage if it doesn’t get through to patients”, as Ed Piper of AstraZeneca pointed out in the The Academy of Medical Sciences FORUM Sir Colin Dollery Lecture panel discussion last week. In some ways, the history of abyssmal implementation (e.g. decades to adopting complex innovations such as handwashing and eating oranges to treat scurvy etc) is a comfort - this not a new problem but " it gives us the motivation to think differently". The keynote, Professor Jo Rycroft-Malone OBE, talked about how the relatively new field of #implementationscience could potentially help. She pointed out, and panellists later agreed, that: 🧠 Knowledge alone is not enough, 💡 Context is a hugely important factor for #implementation (though there is a tension between tweaking implementation for context and the need to be able to implement effectively at scale, across different contexts). 🤝 #coproduction of #innovations and evidence with end-users (including patients) from the start is essential, particularly given that the public can be great advocates for effective healthcare innovation. It was also interesting to think about the importance of de-implementation of old processes/tech alongside implementation of the new, to: 🚪 Ensure equal access to well-evidenced care. 😵 Avoid layering processes on top of each other, decreasing instead of increasing efficiencies. It’s been a busy few weeks I’ve been here, there, everywhere at congresses but there are some takeaways that are common amongst all three I’ve been to: 📚- Being a healthcare professional is HARD WORK. And let’s be clear this is not me being condescending. I honestly don’t know how they keep up with all the new science and data ✈️ - Getting to these congresses is time consuming, expensive and that’s just my from my perspective. Doctors are out of clinic, sometimes self-funding the travel, making them inaccessible for most 🤝 - The amount of doctors I saw bumping into each other, catching up, meeting in person for the first time highlighted to me how important congresses are for building and fostering relationships 🔬🧪🧑🔬 - Pharma is relentless in its research and development to meet unmet patient needs/strive for cures or better outcomes. Its awe inspiring - please keep pushing! No sales-y post here. Just admiration for an industry that is full of inspiration and innovation. Wherever you sit in healthcare, be proud of what you contribute!
