Reviewing some abstracts tonight and thought this was interesting in regards to reading + national security…. Abstract In an era of unprecedented global challenges and complex information landscapes, the ability to read at an advanced level has emerged as a critical factor in ensuring the security and stability of democratic nations. This paper, *Reading for Our Republic*, explores the indispensable role that advanced literacy plays in safeguarding national security, promoting economic resilience, and fostering social cohesion within a republic. It argues that a well-informed and literate citizenry is the foundation of a strong democracy, capable of making informed decisions, resisting misinformation, and engaging meaningfully in civic life. The paper examines how advanced reading skills support the effectiveness of military and intelligence operations, contribute to economic innovation and competitiveness, and enhance global diplomatic efforts. Additionally, it highlights the importance of literacy in mitigating domestic threats by promoting social cohesion and reducing the appeal of extremist ideologies. By linking the act of reading to the broader framework of national security, this paper calls for a renewed focus on literacy as a strategic priority, essential for the preservation and advancement of democratic values in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

After the riots: Building the foundations for social cohesion This paper by the Together Coalition, British Future and Belong-The Cohesion and Integration Network offers a useful analysis of the recent riots, uncovering longer-term trends that underpinned the violent outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need to be building bridges, not walls. But in a world teeming with difference and diversity, we can't rely on our instincts alone to build relationships across divides. Learning how to live together must become a long-term priority for our education system, backed up by government support. https://lnkd.in/eMsfvp5y

Can you believe that when I encounter an accessibility barrier, that task is likely to take me more than twice as long as if it had been accessible? Check out more on this research from AFB!
Did you know that AFB recently released results from its second Barriers to Digital Inclusion Study? We found that each study participant experienced an average of 17.7 barriers during the 10-day period, or about 12 per week. Although participants could resolve most barriers independently or with the help of a sighted person, in about 20% of instances, participants could not find a solution and had to give up on a digital task. Learn more about this study in our most recent AFB Blog post written by AFB’s Director of Research, Dr. Arielle Silverman: https://ow.ly/LB1A50REWnA.

This "Revolution of the Soul" resonates so aptly in the South African context, the legacy of apartheid has left deep wounds that require more than just legal changes for true reconciliation and transformation. Former Chief Justice Pius Langa, in a public lecture at Stellenbosch University on October 9, 2006, highlighted that a commitment to transforming society is central to the new constitutional order. He argued that transformation in South Africa is multifaceted and requires collective commitment to legislative reform and active executive involvement. Langa’s insights emphasize the crucial link between legal frameworks and societal healing. Transformation involves more than just changing or enacting laws; it requires fostering a shared national identity and building relationships among the country’s diverse groups. The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill, which has been in development since the late 2000s, aims to address “social unevenness” as mandated by the South African Constitution. Despite having 56 clauses, only two pertain to admission and language policies, yet these aspects have sparked intense debate. As this SSIR article suggests, 'to fulfill the promise of democracy where all can thrive, there must be a commitment to developing an individual and collective soul that can love all.' May we commit anew to the "work of our generation".
“It’s the work of our generation to take up the unfulfilled promise of ‘We, the People’ and refound a country that truly serves all.” A new SSIR supplement, sponsored by PolicyLink, details how we must move forward into this transformative work to serve as founders of a new nation that can hold, honor, and nourish all. Start your soul work: https://lnkd.in/eNrEH9JZ We must envision and build a shared future so expansive and uncompromising that it becomes irresistible. 🌟 We must reclaim “all” as an expression of our highest aspirations. 🌄 We must occupy the highest ground, spiritually and politically, by fortifying ourselves to be ready to govern in a nation where all truly means all. 🇺🇸 We must take ownership of the nation, with all its faults and promise, and take up our power as founders with a revolutionary love for all. All you reporters out there, and people who know them, spread the word about this series and this particular kick-off session: "Why Government Matters: Let’s Talk about the Jobs It Creates, the Services It Provides, and What Happens If We Can't Count on It" "This session will explore what government is and what’s at stake if it’s unable to serve the public good. What would it take to build a government capable of delivering on these types of public goods while also strengthening government to avoid its being captured by corporations and billionaires? Against the backdrop of these questions, this webinar will explore how we can create public institutions built for both policy delivery and governance that are truly accountable to the public. Government is what we make it. Join us to learn how we can strengthen and reinvent government to serve the public good." https://lnkd.in/e8FxgkGr
