Chief Executive at Arcadia and Lund Trust. Non-exec Director of Wende Museum. Member, English Heritage Blue Plaque Panel. Traktorist.
Seeing the latest report from Communia made me think about the value of long-term grant funding. In 2022 we made an eight-year grant to Communia to support core costs. This is something we are doing more frequently: our longest grants are now for ten years. Long term grants aren’t without challenges, but the ones that most funders fear - what if something goes wrong, or we change our strategy - are poor reasons to tie organisations to short-term grants. Grant-making organisations that constantly (re)strategise create so much anxiety and wasted effort among grantees who are left hanging, waiting to see which way they will have to jump. And tying organisations to short term grants means that if things do go wrong - which they do, from time to time, in any organisation - they don’t have the security of knowing that they have the time and the resources to put things right. Long-term grants need to be flexible enough to accommodate changes in direction by the grant-receiver (not by the grant-maker). There are risks around inflation - the compounding effect means the relative value of our award will be much less at the end, than the beginning. We haven’t tried index-linking grants, I don’t know if anyone else has? Let me know if so.
Today, we are publishing our 2022-2023 annual report that covers COMMUNIA’s activities between July 1, 2022 to December 31, 2023. This corresponds to the first reporting period for our structural grant from Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. During this roll-out stage, we have restructured the organisation in a way to allow it to operate independently and consolidate its role as one of the most important voices for progressive copyright reform in Europe. The report provides an account of our organisational development during that period and gives a detailed overview of our strategic priorities and efforts. We have conducted a multitude of activities to advance COMMUNIA’s mission and, specifically, our 20 Policy Recommendations launched in 2022. So many business owners could get behind a project such as this. These developments going up everywhere in Truro, but I have not heard anything about affordable housing in the mix. There are so many of our families, friends and neighbours are homeless with not enough beds. Folks don't need a great big space...only big enough for a bed, small kitchen area and a bathroom with a sink, toilet and upright shower. This would get people out of the cold and off the street for the winter. Have the Town donate some land for a project, donations of materials to build from local businesses, volunteers to come together with their skills. tools and the willingness to help...you never know, you might be helping a friend who is hitting rock bottom. Think about this...it can be done if everyone brings whatever the can to help. Don't have another cold winter watching folks sleeping on benches or behind buildings...the people of Truro are better than that.

Founder & CEO at Mosaic Search Partners | Diversity-Driven Legal Recruitment | Columbia Law School Alum | Skadden & Fried Frank Alum | Bar-Admitted Attorney | Nonprofit Founder
One of the best parts about managing your own firm is that you can build initiatives that pay things forward without having to convince the higher-ups it’s a worthwhile “marketing investment”. You also don't have to convince anyone that focusing on under-represented candidates is good for the “bottom line”. Both of which are ideas I had shot down by other search firms when I decided to enter the legal recruiting industry. Being able to integrate values-based policies that extend beyond immediate financial gain is one of the biggest reasons I decided to chart my own path after learning from industry greats at larger recruitment shops. I continue to strongly encourage other legal recruitment shops to follow along! Law firms donate meaningful sums of money and time to nonprofits and I see no reason why the search firms who serve them and profit from their success can’t do the same!
For every successful attorney placement, we donate $500 to a nonprofit of the attorney's choice! Today we proudly announce our donation to PETA at the request of Sandy Hao in connection with her move from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP to Winston & Strawn LLP! 🦁 Placement fulfilled by Bryson Malcolm 🦚 Bryson@MosaicSearchPartners.com
