Ellinikon: A Progress Report The Olympics has a mixed legacy for the cities and countries that have hosted them. Beijing had to displace thousands of residents to accomodate new facilities that largely remain vacant today. Likewise, there are a half dozen cities with withering ski jumps and speed skating venues. For Athens, home to the 2004 Summer games, just the opposite occurred. The city smartly invested amply in infrastructure and transportation the consequence of which is 70,000 fewer daily car trips in the city. The site of the sailing competition was the city's abandoned airport which occupied some of the most prime Mediterranean real estate in the world. Now, with the help of an international who's who of architects and engineering firms, this site will now be home to one of the most desirable destinations in Europe. It's hard to believe this won't be a destination port for the world's elite although one hopes there will be some concession for the current Athenians. Green infrastructure in the Southbank project 🌿 🍃 A key component of the Southbank project is its green infrastructure, which will include an extensive network of parks, front gardens, greenery along the streets, as well as lush plantings on the facades and balconies on both residential and office buildings. Greenery and natural elements are seamlessly integrated into the project, serving not only as aesthetic features but also as natural cooling agents, thus improving energy efficiency and reducing the urban heat island effect. The architectural design paid careful attention to the placement and scale of buildings to minimize excessive solar heat gain and improve natural ventilation. The green spaces within the Southbank project will not only enhance the project’s visual appeal and improve its microclimatic conditions, but also provide places for residents to relax, recharge, and enjoy recreational activities, all while supporting urban biodiversity 🌳 - www.southbank.sk

Imagine two impressive towers, 130 and 100 meters tall, constructed primarily from wood, rising in the heart of Eindhoven, Netherlands. This isn't science fiction—it's the groundbreaking "The Dutch Mountains" project. This innovative development is set to redefine urban architecture and demonstrate the immense potential of wood in large-scale construction. Here are some fascinating details: • Sustainable Design: The extensive use of wood will sequester a significant amount of CO2, contributing to long-term carbon capture. • Mixed-Use Development: The project will offer 200 residential units, flexible office spaces, and a hotel, creating a vibrant urban ecosystem. • Community Spaces: Plans include restaurants, conference facilities, and green areas, fostering a dynamic community environment. • Technological Innovation: As befits Eindhoven's reputation as a high-tech hub, the building will incorporate cutting-edge sustainable technologies. This project isn't just about construction—it's a bold statement about the future of sustainable urban development. By showcasing the feasibility of using wood at this scale in an urban setting, "The Dutch Mountains" has the potential to inspire a new generation of sustainable buildings worldwide. Interested in learning more about this revolutionary project? Read our in-depth article for a comprehensive look at the design, sustainability features, and potential impact of "The Dutch Mountains." https://lnkd.in/d4kmBMGx #SustainableConstruction #InnovativeArchitecture #TheDutchMountains #UrbanDevelopment #WoodArchitecture What do you think about this project? Transformation projects in architecture must negotiate between resource conservation and cultural evolution. Culture is fast, buildings are slow. And when we build to respond to these rapid changes, we are literally moving mountains. We have been working with transformation for many years, and see it as a dogma to design with what we already have. From upcycling construction waste to revitalising complex existing structures, we are interested in projects that embrace change while respecting what already exists. Take a look at some of our transformation projects to see the different ways we explore what transformation can be in architecture: 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐲 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫: An unprecedented transformation process that retains 65% of the original tower structure and 95% of the original core. The iconic VIA 57 West is a shining example of sustainable innovation in NYC. With features like radiant heating and cooling systems enhancing energy efficiency, it's no surprise this project was named one of Green.org's 10 Most Sustainable Buildings in NYC. As the city pushes for greener construction, advancements in sustainable design, like PEX piping, are paving the way for more efficient, eco-friendly building systems. 🗽Let's shape the future of sustainable design — one project at a time! #NewYork #Sustainability #ConstructionInnovation #PEXSystems #NYCDevelopment
VIA 57 West in New York City, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is an innovative structure that introduced a new design concept in NYC — the Courtscraper. The structure combines 830,000 square feet of indoor space and 22,000 square feet of courtyard space. The mixed-use project consists of 709 residential units with a commercial and cultural space on the ground levels, as well as a variety of amenities for residents. This innovative building required sustainable technologies throughout, so the BIG group specified Uponor radiant for the heating and cooling system, which improved occupant comfort and reduced energy consumption. The intelligent design and forward-thinking construction even landed the project on the 10 Most Sustainable Buildings in NYC list by Green.org Visual Credit: Iwan Baan

The Masaryčka building in Prague by ZHA for Penta Real Estate is named Czech Republic’s “Building of the Year 2024” The annual competition ‘Building of the Year’ recognises the most important architectural and construction projects in the Czech Republic, this year held in Prague’s Rudolfinum. Integrating with Czech Railways’ reconstruction of the Masaryk Railway Station, Masaryčka establishes a dialogue with the urbanism of Prague’s Old Town, known as ‘the golden city of 100 spires’. Defined by circulation routes giving access to new civic spaces and vital upgrade to an important transport hub, Masaryčka is located adjacent to the historic railway station on a derelict site that had stood abandoned for several decades. Transforming the existing car park on Havlíčkova Boulevard into new public square, creating a welcoming gateway to the city for suburban & domestic rail services and passengers using the planned airport rail link. External fins within Masaryčka’s façade transform the project’s horizontal composition along Na Florenci Street to the verticality of its western end facing the spires of the Old Town. Achieving LEED Platinum certification and meeting RIBA 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon, Masaryčka’s design incorporates roof gardens and a triple-insulated façade that ensures optimal natural light at all work stations. Photovoltaics harvest renewable energy while natural ventilation supported by smart management systems will reduce energy consumption.
