Last night, from the esteemed London sale room, history was made as real estate gaveled live for the first time in Europe since @Sothebys inception in 1744. Achieving more than $160 million in bids, the sale was conducted by Concierge Auctions' head auctioneer Frank Trunzo and Michael Macaulay, deputy chairman of Contemporary Art and a leading auctioneer at Sotheby's London. Streamed to the world, nearly 200 were in attendance to watch the monumental event unfold live. How Christie's, Phillips and Sotheby's schedule their auctions in their main sales centers in New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong is changing. Christie's just announced they would move their next Hong Kong sales to September to be adjacent to Sotheby's (will Phillips stay in late November?) But that puts additional pressure on London which doesn't need 3 sales seasons. So the June Evening sales at Christie's have been demoted. Will Sotheby's keep their Evening sales in July even as they look at rebalancing their European facilities? I would like to share a brief update after Christie's has experienced a technology security incident. We are managing this incident according to well-established practices, supported by experts in the field. We have made proactive decisions -including taking our main website offline. I am pleased to confirm that all our live auctions this coming week will take place as scheduled with the exception of the Rare Watches sale in Geneva that is postponed for just one day to Tuesday 14th May. Our clients for these sales will be able to bid securely in person, on the phone, or online via Christie’s Live. All information, catalogues and content related to these sales can be found via https://lnkd.in/eEE4crNv and on Christie’s YouTube channel, as well as experienced on our social media. Our presale exhibitions have been very busy, with great enthusiasm by our clients. In New York, the highlights include the Collection of Norman & Lyn Lear and the Rosa de la Cruz Collection, as well as masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Joan Mitchell, Ana Mendieta, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and many others. In Geneva, watches from the Property of Michael Schumacher and the Yellow Rose, a 202-carat unmounted coloured diamond from South Africa, have been widely admired. We are looking forward to welcoming our clients to our exhibitions and to registering them to participate in these auctions!

During the first two weeks of March major auctions are scheduled in London and New York. While the private market has been in full swing already, this will be the first public test of the blue-chip art market in 2024. Although many deals are being negotiated even before the auctions get started, it will be interesting to see what the collectors’ appetite for the offered works will be. #artinvestment #artinvesting #diversification #alternativeassets

What happened to Sotheby’s Marquee sales in Hong Kong, originally scheduled for the end of September 2024? Earlier this summer, Sotheby’s announced two major Marquee auctions in Hong Kong for Fall 2024: the Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction on September 25, and the Modern & Contemporary Day Auction on September 26. These sales were strategically set to take place just before Christie’s 20th/21st Century evening and day sales, also scheduled in Hong Kong on September 26 and 27, 2024, respectively. However, both Sotheby’s auctions have since disappeared from the calendar on the company’s website, with no further updates provided. While Pi-eX still anticipates improved market performance in September 2024, the disappearance of these marquee sales raises concerns about the potential for sustained long-term growth.
