In April 2024, Confluence Philanthropy and the New Mexico Impact Investing Collaborative (NMIIC) organized the Collaborative Impact Investing Forum in New Mexico. This Forum aimed to bring investor collaboratives, national funders, and local foundations together to explore how collaboration can improve investment outcomes for social and environmental impact. In our latest blog, Tina N. Castro, CFA and Andrea D. Romero from Avivar Capital, and Adam Rubel from Hai Fund, share their takeaways from the Forum and highlight the benefits of forming investor collaboratives to drive local change.

NEW: Surdna Foundation’s Don Chen: High-risk, high-reward impact investments are paying off (Q&A) The Surdna Foundation’s $100 million carveout for impact investments (split roughly 80/20 between MRIs and PRIs) has grown to $170 million, counting mission-aligned investments in public equities and other strategies from the broader endowment. Along with Impact America Fund, the portfolio includes Founders First Capital Partners and Blackstar Stability, as well as the first two funds from Illumen Capital, VamosVentures and Impact Engine. The kicker: The impact portfolio, consisting largely of private market MRIs and PRIs, has outperformed Surdna’s broader endowment over a trailing five-year period, Don Chen reveals to ImpactAlpha. Chen says the foundation is going “full steam ahead on our impact investing.” Read my full interview with Chen on Surdna's evolving impact investing: https://lnkd.in/grjDfatt

Great read on the evolving Impact investing space, where emerging managers have accounted for 55% of Impact fund closes over the past 5 years. However, despite emerging managers making up more than half of the closes, the total capital raised is still dominated by experienced managers. Last year only 18% of total Impact capital raised went towards emerging managers, with 82% being raised by experienced fund managers.

We were delighted to contribute to this excellent new report by the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) and City of London Corporation, which looks at how the UK can maintain and build upon its status as a Centre of Excellence for Impact Investing globally. The report identifies five key factors that make the UK such an important #impactinvesting hub – mission, expertise, scale, talent, and capacity building initiatives. Crucially, it also identifies three areas where the UK has an opportunity to build on this success to date – all three of which are close to our heart: ➡️ Creating innovative financing models and partnerships ➡️ Meeting the demand for purpose-driven jobs, especially from the younger generation ➡️ Leading the conversation on impact best practice (which we tried to do with our work on the #ImpactManagementProject) Download the report here: https://lnkd.in/dJcf86Cu

Impact investing actively seeks to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside financial returns. 'The UK as a Centre of Excellence in Impact Investing’, in partnership with British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), assesses the UK across five key criteria for a Centre of Excellence: ▪️ Clear Mission ▪️ Knowledge and Expertise ▪️ Scale ▪️ Leading Talent ▪️ Capacity Building We find the UK is in a coveted position to continue to lead and grow as a Centre of Excellence in impact investing, and the significant financial, social, and economic value that impact investing contributes both nationally and globally. The report also identifies trends and opportunities for future growth. As the world increasingly focuses on sustainable and ethical investments, the UK's leadership in impact investing presents immense potential for positive change. In the realm of impact investing, emerging managers—those raising their first to third funds—have outpaced established managers in fund closures, representing over 55% of impact fund closures in the past five years. This trend contrasts with more traditional investment sectors, such as private equity, where experienced managers dominate. Impact investing focuses on achieving social and environmental goals alongside financial returns, highlighting its relative novelty and the opportunities it presents for new managers. However, despite their higher number of fund closures, emerging managers account for a smaller portion of the total capital raised in the impact sector, with established managers securing the majority of funds. The sector has also faced significant fundraising challenges recently, with a notable drop in activity, underscoring the difficulties faced by managers in both segments.
