Excellent recommendations from this task force in Louisiana. I hope the state listens and enacts these life-saving measures, including incentives to put more nurse midwives and advanced practice nurses to work, especially in those parts of the state where there are no practicing physicians. And in addition to these more clinically focused recommendations, there is also a role for an all-of-community approach to make birth safer. AIM CCI is such a model, recognizing that there are many touchpoints along the birthing journey that can have a positive impact on the outcome. It truly takes the village. 2024 Focus: Social Justice Issues in Perinatal Health and Human Milk Feeding Based on Communities of Practice principles, Perinatal Health Mondays are an informal, safe, and consistent space where perinatal health and early childhood stakeholders gather to share knowledge, challenges, and opportunities for peer learning. Each PHM session focuses on a specific topic, led by a subject matter expert. Following the presentation there will be a brief opportunity for facilitated networking and discussion. As we observe #WorldBreastfeedingWeek (August 1-7), I'm reflecting on the crucial role breastfeeding plays in child health and the importance of supporting Texas mothers who choose this path. The World Health Organization reminds us that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a child's health and survival. However, fewer than half of infants under 6 months old are exclusively breastfed. In Texas, we face our own unique challenges. From working mothers needing adequate workplace accommodations to families in rural areas requiring access to lactation support, there's still work to be done. Every mother's journey is different, and it's vital that we create an environment where all choices are respected. For those who choose to breastfeed, we must ensure they have the support they need - in their communities, workplaces, and through healthcare policies. I'm curious to hear from Texas parents and healthcare providers: What support do you think is needed most for breastfeeding mothers? How can we better educate and empower families about infant feeding choices? The lack of breastfeeding support and related challenges are widespread and are rooted in socioeconomic, racial and geographical gaps which contribute to significant health problems for both mothers and infants. Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure infant health and yet less than half of infants under 6 months old are exclusively breastfed. There are many reasons for this: from lack of knowledge and cultural norms to logistical issues and insufficient support, the barriers are different for every woman. For over 60 years, we have worked to improve family health and eliminate barriers to breastfeeding. Through partnerships with governments, civil society and frontline health workers, we help strengthen health systems that improve the accessibility, quality and equity of care. We also champion family adoption of positive health practices like kangaroo mother care and train and mentor community health workers to educate parents on the basics of lactation. #WorldBreastfeedingWeek

Action Against Hunger advocates Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method for its multifaceted benefits. KMC,an impactful method harnesses the nurturing bond between mother and baby. KMC in most cases is given by mothers; but fathers and caregivers in the family are also encouraged to give Kangaroo Care to enhance the emotional connect with the baby through skin-to-skin contact. KMC is an effective way to meet baby’s needs for warmth, breasfeeding, protection from infection, stimulation, safety and love. It is an effective solution for improving care and outcome for low-birth-weight babies. It fosters an environment conducive to healthy growth and development.
