Anastasiia Zhelezko had planned her humanitarian career since 3rd year of her Bachelor’s degree. She was finishing her degree at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 2022, already with the intention to work in the humanitarian field, when Russia invaded Ukraine, and everything happened faster than she thought. “I realized that currently, the history of Ukraine is being created, and if I want to contribute to it, working in the humanitarian sphere is probably one of the best options to help address people’s needs.” Since March 2024, Zhelezko has been doing just that by overseeing partner implementation of gender-based violence programming through our Community-Led Emergency Action and Response (CLEAR) program. Learn more about how she is strengthening the capacity of community partners to support women and girls amid the war in Ukraine: https://bit.ly/4fDMJY2 Global Washington #Ukraine #Gender #GBV

“The ones who have survived are still struggling to live but without a support system, either from their families or their communities,” said one Global Communities staff member who is on the ground in Gaza. “[They are] trying to cope with an inhumane environment of lost habitat, resources and safety networks. The disregard for life also extends to the lives of humanitarian workers.” The passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza has been extremely hindered, if not halted altogether. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the region and 93,000 have been reported injured. The need for a ceasefire is long overdue.

Global Communities has a rich history in implementing Child Protection in Emergencies programs, offering services like psychosocial counseling, art therapy, life skills, literacy, and parenting sessions. In Ukraine, local actors deliver these services with our technical assistance. It's not always an easy process and requires adaptation, but ensures greater sustainability and responsiveness to community needs. In this next #PassTheMic, Paulina (Paula) Rudnicka sits down with Emily Galloway, who shares how we apply localization principles to child protection interventions within our USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance Community-led Emergency Action and Response (CLEAR) program in Ukraine. It is estimated that 1 in 4 women are affected by pregnancy and infant loss. This is due to factors such as poor quality of care, socioeconomic factors and structural racism in health care, among other reasons. For two decades, Casa Materna (Mother's Home in English) has provided outreach, education services, clinical services and an inpatient facility for women with high-risk pregnancies. In October, we recognize Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and recognize the positive impact of this facility and program on maternal and infant care in Guatemala. Since 2000, it has provided more than 100,000 indigenous women with culturally-sensitive and high-quality reproductive health care, housed more than 19,000 mothers and ensured safe deliveries of their babies.

Literacy is the cornerstone for all learning 📚 We address this across all of our USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)-funded McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition projects by establishing libraries, providing school supplies and materials, training teachers and creating positive learning environments. The Mianatra project, which means "Learn" in Malagasy, is Madagascar’s first McGovern-Dole project. In the past year, it supported over 150 schools across Southern Madagascar, a region that is vulnerable to low school enrollment and poor attendance, while also providing daily school meals to students.
