Weekly Friday Personal Post: My latest Sidecar association dialogue series article is out; it's with Jay Karen, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). I met Jay last year at the ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership NextGen conference. Along with the young association leaders chosen for the program, Jay was there as an ASAE board member to observe/engage and provide his insights. He articulated so many great pieces of feedback to us in the final session of the program on his takeaways from the program and his advice regarding what he heard from all of us. This talk from him is a large part of what prompted me to start this dialogue series. Leaders like him have so much wisdom to part. I wanted to get more of it but also have it documented so others could learn from it too. In our dialogue, what Jay touches on includes: --How being part of and leading a bunch of clubs in school helped him explain activities more clearly and showed him the value of having connections/friends in many places --The importance of in your communications getting into the issues your members care about and not simply promoting the association --How to keep things fresh in your member meetings, which for NGCOA includes something remarkably new happening at their annual conference at least every other year --The need to consider what's going on outside the industry and how to apply it to your industry, which Jay does in part from reading The Wall Street Journal Saturday edition each week --The value of getting involved in ASAE including being able to engage peers in your position, which is particularly important and valuable when you're in the CEO position Learn about the above and more in the full dialogue! A link to the full dialogue is in the comments. You can access it for free after making an account with Sidecar.
