Happy #InternationalDayOfForests 💚🌳 We understand the biggest threat facing our world today is climate change, and eco-anxiety is being felt by many of us. So, today, we want to raise awareness for our beloved forests and spotlight the ecosystem engineers such as elephants. A single forest elephant can increase the carbon storage of African rainforests by 9,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per km. If you’re wondering what the carbon credit value of that might be in monetary terms… it’s $1.75 million. 🐘 Innovation and technology are also vital in combating climate change, such as eco-agriculture and rewilding, which are helping restore forests on degraded land – and could contribute up to a third of the total climate mitigation needed to limit warming to below 2°C by 2030. 🌍 We’re also using this #InternationalDayOfForests to introduce Wild Africa Fund! They recently successfully launched a campaign in Kenya that resulted in a public holiday being declared for their first ‘National Tree Planting Day’—an ongoing public holiday with the goal of eventually planting 100 million trees. Read our latest blog, ‘Frontiers in the Fight for our Forests’, to find out more: https://lnkd.in/e_8SX8w2 Please share this post and blog so you can champion our beloved green spaces. 🌿 #InternationalDayOfForests #LoveForests #ForestsOfInstagram #Spring #FightProtectEngage #TheArtofSurvival #VoiceForTheVoiceless #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #EndangeredSpecies #EcoEngineers #EcoAnxiety #EnviromentalAwareness

The natural estuaries are habitats of enormous importance for numerous fish species and birds. 🐟🦜They serve as nurseries for many marine life forms and provide protection from floods. However, these vital ecosystems are increasingly under threat. ‼️👫 According to a new study, almost half of all estuaries worldwide have been severely altered by human impact, and a significant proportion of these losses have only occurred in the last 35 years. It is particularly worrying that the greatest habitat losses are occurring in countries with strong economic development. This highlights the urgency of taking action to protect and restore these valuable habitats. Through targeted conservation measures, we can help to preserve biodiversity, keep ecosystems intact and mitigate the consequences of climate change. 🌿🌍 Let's act together to protect our estuaries! 🌊✊ Find out more at this link: https://lnkd.in/dhwaFg5k 📷: Nathan Anderson - unsplash.com #riverestuaries #environmentalprotection #conservation #species diversity #sustainability #biodiversity #marinehabitats #climateprotection #sustainablefisheries #fishfarming #riverprotection

Global Biodiversity and climate justice actions, Environmental and social justice work and admirer and supporter of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in nature protection
🌲 International Rainforest Day 🌲 was celebrated on the 22nd of June. However, the importance of rainforests especially in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Papua to the climate, biodiversity and people cannot be underestimated. So we should celebrate the sacredness of these forests every blessed day! We should always celebrate the diversity of cultures and its importance in the protection of the world’s rainforests, as well as call attention to the need to have Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at the center of conversations and decision-making spaces about resource allocation for biodiversity protection and restoration. It is important to highlight how Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities already have the solutions to prevent biodiversity loss and fight the climate crisis, and we must work with them to mobilise the resources they need and also stand with them to defend their rights and lives. #protectandrestorerainforests #standwithIPsandLCs https://lnkd.in/ghY3hA5J

We cannot go back in time and undo the damage we caused, but we can revive water sources, bring back soils, and grow forests. Up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded that directly affects more that half of the world's population. With a changing climate, the occurrence of desertification and droughts are becoming more common and severe in certain parts of the world. CSA has been working in the Succulent Karoo—a biodiversity hotspot—to restore, protect and manage communal rangelands that in turn support food and climate security and biodiversity conservation. This supports and builds the resilience of the most vulnerable communities that depend on nature for their livelihoods but who also happen to be most hit by climatic impacts. 👇🏼Hear more from Malherbe Rossouw, CSA's Restoration Manager based in the Namakwa region. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #OurLandOurFuture #GenerationRestoration

Conservationists have unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at securing vital migratory routes for elephants across Africa, a crucial step in safeguarding these majestic creatures from the escalating impacts of climate change. The ambitious project, spearheaded by @newsmg, seeks to establish a network of protected corridors, allowing elephants to roam freely and access essential resources as their habitats shift due to environmental factors. According to conservationist Karl Wayne, 'Providing elephants with the ability to migrate is pivotal for their survival and adaptation in the face of climate-induced habitat loss.' This visionary approach not only benefits elephants but also promotes biodiversity and ecosystem resilience across the continent. With climate change posing an ever-growing threat, initiatives like this underscore the urgency of proactive conservation efforts to ensure the long-term survival of iconic species like the elephant. #ClimateResilience #ElephantConservation #MigratoryRoutes

Mangroves are true biodiversity hotspots, acting as nurseries for marine life and shelters for countless species, creating vibrant and essential ecosystems. They are also vital for maintaining water quality, as their dense root systems filter pollutants and trap sediments from rivers and streams. Additionally, mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by acting as significant carbon sinks, sequestering large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They also help stabilize shorelines, preventing erosion and protecting coastal areas from storm surges and rising sea levels. 🌿 On this #MangrovesDay, we are proud to celebrate our collaboration on the Nna Samaa Mankolou project in The Gambia, led by Edinburgh Napier University and The Association for Coastal Ecosystem Services, with support from Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy. This community-based initiative aims to restore mangroves in Sankandi, enhancing local biodiversity, protecting the area from erosion and also supporting local communities by improving livelihoods. Together, we're making a difference, one mangrove at a time. 🌱 #MangroveRestoration #MangrovesDay #conservation #ClimateAction #biodiversity #nature
