Today at the University of Surrey, the Institute is co-hosting the IAS Surrey Workshop on Integrative Interventions Across Neglected Tropical Diseases to Support #Sustainable Public #Health #Policy with Dr Joaquin Prada and Dr Martha Betson. Neglected tropical diseases have devastating human, social, and economic impacts on over one billion people worldwide, predominantly among the most vulnerable, marginalised populations. Control and elimination programmes generally target a specific disease in isolation, while integrative approaches across diseases can be more effective in supporting progress towards ambitious control and elimination of the diseases across the communities. The workshop will address the challenges, constraints, barriers, and previous experience of integrating activities from various fields to tackle such tropical diseases, as well as share the success stories and discuss the solutions to facilitate the integrative approach. Hear from the workshop co-organiser, Dr Joaquin Prada. “What we are trying to do here is think about how we integrate across diseases, across sectors to hopefully provide more sustainable policies that can be maintained in the long term. It’s really just a start of the conversation”. – Dr Joaquin M. Prada, Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology, School of Veterinary Medicine This workshop is sponsored by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) and the Institute for Sustainability at the University of Surrey. The workshop aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals #SDG1, #SDG3, and #SDG17. #sustainability #nopoverty #publichealth #disease #tropicaldiseases #SDGs

🌍 Urgent Call for Global Oversight in Virus Research In a bold move responding to past controversies and potential risks, the U.S. has implemented a robust policy demanding stringent federal review and approval for research on pathogens that could potentially trigger a pandemic. This comes a century after viruses were first identified as disease agents, and decades since the contentious 2012 experiments that made avian flu more contagious among mammals. This policy sets a new global standard for safety and transparency in high-risk virus research. The aim? To prevent accidental pandemics by ensuring that such research is conducted responsibly. 🔬 What This Means: Tighter controls and oversight of high-risk biological research. Increased collaboration between international scientific communities to adopt similar measures. A commitment to transparency and safety in scientific advancements. Let's discuss how these changes can shape safer research practices worldwide. Your thoughts? #PublicHealth #VirusResearch #GlobalSafety #PandemicPrevention #SciencePolicy
