To truly diversify your workforce, you must diversify your recruiting lens.

Something I’m extremely proud of: We took a big risk and went on an epic adventure. 3 years ago, Allison and I sold or stored everything we owned, remodeled a salvaged travel trailer, packed up our 4 kids, and hit the road for 18 months. I had taken a role in a nonprofit teaching ministry for people struggling in their faith. I love the long version of people’s stories. And in-person hangouts are far better than phone or video calls when you’re pouring out your heart. Because people in crises of faith deserve conversations instead of answers. The kind of conversations that take seriously what they’ve seen and heard. And their questions. So, for a year and a half (a year after COVID started), we lived like mission-focused nomads. I created theological, teaching, and resource content remotely and visited network members anywhere I could on our travel trails. We moved our backyard sometimes daily, sometimes every 2 weeks, and a few times after a few months. The kids got to see 15 states, the Everglades, the Rio Grande River Gorge, the Palo Duro Canyon, and dozens of state and national parks, to name a few. We LOVED it. It could have been a train wreck. The kids could have hated it. It could have been a failed experiment. But it wasn’t. It wasn’t a money-making business, so I can’t say we finished in the black financially, but the stories, the connections, and the adventures were well worth the struggle. I wish we could have kept going, but my boys were ready for baseball and we needed to get into better paying careers. We all define wins differently. For Allison and me, adventure is part of that equation. We believe our journey was an incredible and a formative experience for our children. And the kids actually miss it! Are you willing to take the risk and go for what you dream of? Are you willing to sacrifice comfort and predictability? And to work your tail off to make it happen? You can do it. You’ve all heard me talk about U360…so now I want to share this video so you can hear what past students have to say about their experience in this year-long, #experientialeducation and #professionaldevelopment program at Manomet that’s focused on #businesssustainability And at the same time, I want to take a moment to say a few things about the students I have the privilege of mentoring through U360. In a word, they’re remarkable. They’re hard-working and dedicated; U360 is a rigorous program and many are doing it on top of a full course load and other commitments, and they still show up every day and give full effort. They’re brave; they do things that push the boundaries of their comfort zone and scare them (like calling up business owners and CEOs, presenting a business plan to judges, etc.), all because they want to grow personally and professionally. They’re mature with high emotional intelligence; they lift each other up and help one another succeed, they welcome and apply feedback, they’re compassionate and eager to learn from people with different perspectives and backgrounds. But what’s most impressive and inspiring about our U360 students is how committed and passionate they are about creating a more sustainable future for us all. They’ve grown up under the threat of the #climatecrisis t, went to high school or college over Zoom during the pandemic, and have been raised in a society that’s divided and polarized on every issue. But rather than feeling defeated or resigned, they want to fight and do whatever it takes to make the world better for their generation and the next ones. Sometimes they ask me what the world used to be like before they were born…and I tell them; not because I think we should go backwards, but because I want them to imagine what a better future could look like. I want them to know that they’re our future leaders and if they work together, anything is possible — they can change the trajectory of how the world is today. Great post Tor, Charity Bike Build provides an opportunity for those starting out on a career to experience team dynamics within a project or programme. All the key areas are covered. There is the orientation, why am I here? Trust, What is the goal? The plan. What is mine and your responsibility? Delivery and Agility. All leading to high performance. This is invaluable in helping facilitated discussion to draw out key learnings and shape thinking in the early part of anyones career and for those of us who have been working for years.
