FISC Safety Alert: There have been sadly two fatalities in recent months and other serious incidents involving earthmoving equipment and water. The Forestry Industry Safety Council has released the attached safety alert that equally applies to the construction industry. Our thoughts go out to the families and others involved in this tragedy.

Prescribed fire is a crucial tool for wildlife habitat management and forestry, improving habitat for various wildlife species, providing forage for cattle, and promoting oak regeneration. To ensure safe and effective conduct, consider several factors; 1. Determine your management objectives in your burn plan, which will dictate the frequency, timing, and techniques of burning. 2. Have a well-written burn plan that addresses all relevant components of the prescribed fire, including management objectives, weather prescriptions, fuel type(s), location and composition of firebreaks, equipment and personnel, safety considerations, and contingency plan. 3. Ensure firebreaks are in place, as inadequate firebreaks can pose a safety hazard. Check the width and composition of firebreaks and inspect them the day of the burn. 4. Use bare soil firebreaks, empty crop fields, green growing vegetation without thatch, paved roads, and streams, creeks, or rivers to restore grasslands. 5. Use a leaf blower to remove leaf litter and expose bare mineral soil.

Through decades of careful transitioning, could CCF be the future of forestry in the UK? Until then careful woodland management and planning needs to take place to ensure we are able to meet our timber demands in the UK from our own resource, therefore gradually becoming less reliant on imports and stepping down as the third largest timber importer in the world.
Our NEW blog post explores the benefits of Continuous Cover Forestry, a good management option for those who wish to produce timber, maintain wildlife habitats and enjoy their woodland environment. We share it in loving memory of its co-author Bill Mason, late Chair of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group (CCFG). He will be greatly missed. https://lnkd.in/d4XSR9zY
