"We shouldn't have to do that" Recently I was talking to someone in the industry and that was their sentiment surrounding extended & enhanced onboarding for new summer interns. We had just discussed how our Workforce Development team gets a full week to get our new summer interns (current college students studying something construction or engineering related) and how appreciative we are that our Execs & Operations Team fully support this investment. Should we HAVE to do this? To me that is irrelevant - we have data and anecdotal evidence showing that we NEED to do this. Our commitment to "Investing In People" compels us to take the time necessary to set these young folks (most of whom are new to the industry) up for success & for "Winning In The Field" Reminds us of the quote from Henry Ford: "The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay." It's good for the interns, Sargent, our industry, and our region(s). 3 Things My Interns Taught Me This Year: -Support Their Boundary-Setting: Notice those small moments where they work past fear of disappointing you or anyone else in order to set a boundary, and celebrate that moment! That moment may have taken so much energy to work up to, so let them know you value their effort in doing so. There are too many of us who struggle with setting boundaries, so it is always a great moment when our young people test this out. -Assume the Best: Okay, I already knew this, but I am always appreciative of those moments when you assume anyone you are working with has great intention when something does not go perfectly, and then you find out context that you were correct. We all just want to do our best! -Prioritize Space for Creative Freedom: If it were not for this, allowing my interns to have some decision-making power in how we navigate certain strategies, we would not have been able to create such meaningful connections with students on this campus. So thank you to my interns, enjoy the remainder of your summer, and I will see you in the Fall!

Later this month, I will be starting a teaching internship one night a week at a local college as part of my Capstone before earning my graduate degree next Spring. I am fond of the quote "It is never too late to become who you might have been". This post includes 7 lessons for a happy life for people aged 60+. David Martinez (BA Business Administration '25) came to the W. P. Carey School of Business as a first-generation college student with a lifelong passion for business. "My grandpa had a tortilla factory back in Mexico. I wanted to be like him." During his time at ASU, David has found community with other students at ASU's Polytechnic campus, and an interest in human resources through his major in business administration, joining student organizations, and taking part in internships. Early thoughts on the new Dietetic Internship Matching Process: I am a big fan and 5 of our 35 students this academic year have already secured internship spots. 3 of the 5 are not graduating until Spring 2025. The opportunity for a spring graduate to secure an internship in early October vs early April is awesome. They now have ample time to focus on finishing their upper-level DPD coursework, applying to graduate schools, and looking for apartments, which does wonders for the state of mind of these students. Is it difficult to manage all of the different priority deadlines? Yes, but that is what DPD Directors are for! At Texas Tech, we have an entire 3-hour course dedicated to DICAS and internship preparation every fall for our seniors. I see the difficulty for internship directors in this new system as they navigate application deadlines and recruiting but this change is a positive one that gives power to the students. I anticipate >75% of my group this year will have an internship secured before they start classes in the spring. From the DPD side, this is great news.
