Electric power is the future for going REALLY fast. "If you want to go fast, really, truly, pants-sh*ttingly fast, you need to start taking electric power seriously." Many of you know that I raced go- karts in my younger years. My kart had a Yamaha KT100SE 100cc engine, which gave about 18hp and 10lbft torque, with 10.5:1 reduction gears (9 tooth fron sprocket 94 tooth rear sprocket) and that thing seemed quick. However, I've NEVER seen a go kart pull a wheelie. This thing is truly MAD! Watch the acceleration in the video: it's doing 0-60mph (100kmh) in well under 3 seconds. The acceleration is all down to huge electric torque. While the quoted torque figures are likely at the wheels (it will be geared down substantially too), it gives you an idea of just how potent this thing is. Here's the thing: we'll see most of motorsport go this way, especially as the weight of batteries comes down. The benefits of electric power to going fast are just too great to ignore.
