How do you encourage repeat giving? By communicating the impact that past donations have made. If your charity runs ‘always on’ fundraising, or a campaign appeal that re-occurs every year, you need existing donors to continue to dig deep. This means striking the balance between the ongoing need (urgency) and the positive difference contributions have made (hope). In research conducted for a charity campaign, we found that previous donors had been concerned that their donation in the last year’s campaign had been a drop in the ocean. Donors were feeling overwhelmed by the scale of the challenge and uncertain that their donation made any difference. The more sure we are that our donations make a real difference, the more motivated we are to donate. Communicating the impact of contributions helps donors feel efficacy - the feeling that their contribution matters and makes a genuine difference. In the gaps between recurring campaign appeals make sure you communicate the positive impact contributions have made: whether that’s how many volunteer counsellors they helped to train or how many clean water taps they helped to instal in a community. ‘You’ve made a difference’ language leverages efficacy and control, retains donors and encourages repeat giving. - If your charity would like support with campaign strategy, drop me a DM. Many charitable institutions work with commercial participators to access new funding sources and increase public awareness. But what is a commercial participator? A commercial participator is an individual or business which promotes their goods or services on the basis that they will make contributions to one or more charitable institutions. Examples of commercial participators include: - an author who contributes £1 to a charitable institution for every book they sell - a charity bag company that contributes £100 to a charitable institution for every tonne of textiles they collect - a prize draw company that contributes a percentage of profits from each prize draw to charity; or - a musician who contributes all profits from their ticket sales for an event to charity. Never make donations through a big corporate store. For every customer they get to donate, that’s money they get a tax write off using the money you donated. If you still want to donate to a particular charity check their 990 which needs to be filed every year. Search by organization name, state, zip code, or EIN. Many non-profit organizations will provide their annual reports with the 990s (tax filing), and/or financial statements. Basic organization information is available for free, including revenue and expense figures. Non-profits are hiring corporate executives after they leave the private sector, to run their organizations. Paying corporate salaries above six figures to their CEO’s/Executive Directors and upper management. Check what amount of the monies collected go directly to programs. Most charities only spend 10% in programs. A good charity will spend over 75%. Lastly confirm if the organization has made an impact in addressing the community issues they promised to serve.
