The dramatic growth of the data center opportunity across growth markets will benefit infrastructure investors already there, says Thomas Liu, a Partner at global infrastructure investment firm Actis. Actis recently launched a data center platform called Epoch Digital, which has developments in Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan. Liu points to the recent transformation of the Malaysian market as evidence that countries once far behind the information revolution are rapidly becoming digital hubs. In reaction to a moratorium on new data centers in Singapore, neighboring Johor, Malaysia has gone from "zero to over a gigawatt of power announced," notes Liu. Global hyperscaler customers eyeing growth markets may initially measure modest demand, but "the demand will inevitably grow over time. And so as a new partner to the hyperscalers as they enter the market, we will then continue to grow with them into these markets, since we have built a track record of delivering," says Liu. Liu made his comments in the Cool Vector episode, "Actis' Sustainable Strategy in Digital Infrastructure." Malaysia: "Johor, the southern state which borders Singapore, has drawn about 50 data center projects in the last three years, including from ByteDance and Microsoft." "Johor alone is set to draw some $3.8 billion in investment in data centers this year, according to separate estimates by Malaysian bank Maybank. In June, the Johor government said nine data centers were complete, with at least 30 more projects in the pipeline." "Electricity demand from data centers could exceed 5,000 MW by 2035, or nearly a fifth of the installed capacity of Peninsular Malaysia where Johor is located, the national electricity company Tenaga Nasional Berhad estimates." https://lnkd.in/gcu34QHr #malaysia #datacenters #startupmalaysia #asiatechnews #Technologynews

NST 18 June 2024 Singtel's regional data centre business, Nxera, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Malaysian telco TM to develop a series of data centres, starting with a large campus in Johor. Welcome to Malaysia ! This project, set to be the largest for both companies, will be located in Iskandar Puteri, just 16 km away from Singapore. The site will cater to hyperscalers, AI application providers, and enterprises, promising top-notch reliability, security, and sustainability, along with excellent connectivity both locally and internationally. The initial phase of the data centre will boast a capacity of 64 MW, with plans to scale up to 200 MW, specifically designed to support high-power density workloads with cutting-edge technologies like liquid cooling. While this partnership presents exciting opportunities for both Singtel and TM, we can't help but raise concerns about whether Malaysia will see proportionate benefits from this venture. With the substantial electricity demand that data centres require, coupled with potential government subsidies adding to the mix, it's crucial to ensure fair play for all parties involved. Will Malaysia Government have a knowledgeable, professional negotiating team in place to secure the best possible deal for Malaysia ? Unfortunately, historical precedents may suggest otherwise. It's essential for both companies to work together transparently and fairly to ensure that the benefits of this partnership are reasonably distributed. #Singtel #TM #Nxera #DataCentre #DigitalTransformation #TechPartnership #Malaysia #Singapore #Innovation #BusinessGrowth #DigitalEconomy #StrategicPartnership #DataInfrastructure #FairPlay #Negotiations #Sustainability
