Director of Career Services, Counseling & Veteran Services at Manchester Community College (Retired Emeritus -Feb 2015)
For the past five or six years, I enjoyed having a great outlet for my fishing articles. Norm Vance, editor of the Pagosa Sun Journal, which covered southwestern Colorado, referred to me as his outdoor columnist/humorist and published every piece I sent to him. It was a great relationship and I appreciated his support. Last year, the publication merged with another regional paper and the new outlet does not currently support an outdoors section and that door quickly closed. Since then, I have been trying to find a place willing to run my pieces. I have some good news. An online site called, The Trout Bandit, has accepted my most recent article, Finding Solitude in Fly Fishing. The piece will run in two parts. The link to Part One is below and they will run Part Two in a couple of weeks. They seem very interested in running some of the other articles I have sent in, but are holding off on any further discussion until they see how their readers respond to my first submission. In this clearly blatant act of self-promotion, I am bringing you up to date with this news. If you feel so inclined, visit Trout Bandit, give it a read, send the link to your friends and feel free to leave a comment. This is a great opportunity to have my articles reach a larger audience. Remember this age-old discussion, “If a tree fell in a forest and nobody was around to hear it, would it make a noise?” My response? It probably still would have more listeners than I have readers. Hopefully this opportunity will help turn that around. Here is the link to The Trout Bandit - https://lnkd.in/eXqtcyWt and my article is Finding Solitude in Fly Fishing. Thanks! Continue to stay well & have fun! Carl Ochnio

I would place fishing near the top of my list of things that bring me joy. I love to trek into the woods, bushwhacking to find that hidden gem that may carry a giant largemouth or catfish. Tucked away from other humans and completely full of weeds, places like that are only fished by the most dedicated of anglers. Anyone can go out on a boat, tie on some stinky bait, and hook up. Trekking out to their territory, learning their habitats and lanes, and presenting them with artifical lures and a multitude of presentations to find the bite, that is the fishing I am after. There is something supremely satisfying about hooking up with a monster in a small body of water. A monster that got that way by being smart, cunning, and aggressive. A monster that passed many anglers by, but was tricked by me into taking the bait and going for the ride. RFPs are a lot like fishing. Rates come in that are ridiculously low and rates come in that are sky high. These are the anglers just spraying and praying, hoping to get a bite from the small fish. The fish that are in panic mode and are starving to eat. Maybe the pressure is on to save millions, so they are just diving for dollars...or for the next meal. The carriers that truly understand the lane, the market, and the appetite will bid numbers that are sustainable. Numbers that can carry on through tight and loose markets. Numbers that entice the seasoned fish, the fish that has felt the ride before and is not about to get tricked again. The fish that has experience with the weekend warriors and their presentation, and now it takes a true master of the sport to hook them. Good luck to all the anglers out there. #fishinglife #workhardplayharder #winningmindset #servantleadership

The oceanic whitetip shark! 🦈 This giant, a stocky shark with distinctive white-tipped fins, rules the warm temperate and tropical seas. Named for the elegant white tips on its dorsal, pectoral, and tail fins, these solitary predators are the kings of the open ocean food web. From biting into schools of bony fish to effortlessly swimming through tuna gatherings, these sharks are absolute powerhouses. Found in the Indo-Pacific, the Mediterranean, and warm latitudes across all oceans, they can reach lengths of up to 396 cm (13 ft)! However, it's not all smooth sailing for our oceanic friends. Their population is on the decline due to historical fishing pressure. Caught in large numbers as bycatch or targeted for their fins, skin, and oil, they need our help to ensure their survival. 🦈UNLEASH YOUR WiLD SIDE! www.oceans-alive.org www.lionmountain.tv @OceansAliveConservationTrust @oceansalivetrainingacademy @lionmountain.media Let's spread awareness and work towards a future where these incredible creatures can thrive in our oceans. #lionmountaintv #wildlife #endangeredspecies #marinewildlife #saveouroceans #saveourwildlife #saveourplanet #seasave #conservation #earthcapture #underwater #wildlifeonearth #natgeoyourshot #scubalovers #nature_perfection #OceanicWhitetipShark #SharkConservation #MarineLifeConservation #OceanConservation #WildlifeProtection #UnderwaterWorld #NaturePhotography #SharkAwareness #ConservationEfforts #SaveOurSharks #OceanicWhitetip #ConservationMatters

Retracing your steps when you lose the trail is always a good idea to avoid creating social trails. This simple act is a testament to your commitment to responsible hiking practices. Wandering off-trail has negative implications for both you (you could get lost, run into unexpectedly hazardous terrain, etc.) and the environment. Treading off the trail can harm plants, animals, and animal habitats in the area.
