⚠️ Knowing how to administer naloxone could help you to save a life. Join us on Thursday 12 September 12:30, for a full training session & chat about harm reduction in the third sector. 💉 Register now on Eventbrite: https://lnkd.in/e7de2C5z Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an overdose of opioid drugs like codeine, morphine, tramadol, fentanyl, heroin, methadone and buprenorphine. In the UK it is legal for anyone to administer naloxone to anyone for the purpose of saving a life. Administering naloxone is not a substitute for calling an ambulance, you should always call 999 if you think someone is having an overdose. The training will be carried out by experienced staff from the Midlothian Substance Use Service. #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose #StopTheDeaths #HarmReduction

Selected Opioid Aggregate Production Quotas, 2020 - 2024 In October 2018, the Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities (SUPPORT) Act became law. As part of its provisions, procedures were enacted that require DEA to estimate the diversion rates (including overdose deaths and abuse) of "covered controlled substances" and make reductions in pertinent APQs. The covered controlled substances are fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, oxymorphone, and hydromorphone. DEA considers information from a number of outside entities when establishing the APQs for legitimate use and the amounts diverted for these substances. I'll reserve discussion on this aspect for another day. For this post, I examined the annual APQs of the covered controlled substances for five years (2020 - 2024). The 2020 APQs were impacted by COVID-19 related increases and were removed from the final comparison to avoid impacting the data. The final column of the attached chart represents a percentile difference comparing 2021 APQ amounts to 2024 APQ amounts.

When we say to normalize naloxone, this is why. Per SAPC, accidental overdoses skyrocketed by 1,652% in just 6 years. There is no room for stigma and judgment when we lose over 100 individuals a day to opioid overdoses. By carrying naloxone, you can be the reason that someone gets another chance. Full report linked in article below. If you are wondering how to recognize/respond to an opioid overdose or need free naloxone, comment or send me a DM.

It will be interesting to see if the at-risk population for opiate overdose would be accepting of an implanted naloxone device. If so, many lives can be saved. If the device needs to continuously monitor HR and breathing rate, then power consumption will definitely be a concern. Ideally, we should pair this with an energy-harvesting technology so the battery never runs out or needs an external recharge.
A new implantable device can detect an opioid overdose and rapidly pump out a dose of naloxone. “This could really address a significant unmet need in the population that suffers from substance abuse and opiate dependency,” Gio Traverso says. https://lnkd.in/g5n-2Msa

The answer is YES. It can help patients reduce cravings for opioids or alcohol, which can make it easier to stop using. Medications can also reduce the risk of overdose because patients are less likely to take too much of their drugs of choice.
