There has been a push toward "re-wilding" your property, or in this case planting a "pocket forest". While the sentiment here is commendable, it is important that you understand and consider the implications of these outdoor property management strategies. As mentioned in this article, these landscaping options will increase bio-diversity. While this will increase friendly woodland creatures like rabbits (if not invasive and damaging in your area) and birds, you are also inadvertently increasing the carrying capacity for disease vector species like mice, rats, mosquitos, ticks, and more. Given time, the opportunity to enter the structure or increase the risks for the occupants, will become a reality. There is a well established body of research that directly links ground cover and "natural" habitats near structures, with larger pest populations. In one study, regular mowing was found to be the most effective method to manage rodent populations without the use of pesticides or lethal control devices. It is critical to consider the entire impact of these types of property management decisions. 🍁⚫️ Shot-hole borer crisis threatens Perth's tree canopy Hundreds of trees have been removed across the Perth region and hundreds more have been earmarked for removal under the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development’s management of Polyphagous shot-hole borer. The department’s commitment to an eradication approach sees affected trees removed with the view to eliminating the pest. Local authorities, tree owners and other stakeholders suggest that more open communication is needed, and that alternative approaches should also be considered, as attempts at eradicating the pest have failed in other parts of the world. Arboriculture and urban tree management experts and community groups are concerned that tree losses could increase exponentially, with significant impact on Perth’s already low canopy cover, and that the pest might be more likely to escape to other states and territories if the current approach is sustained. It has been suggested that a broader approach founded on evidence-based science involving local trees is needed. Did you know the best time of year to prune a tree is in the winter? 🌳 Our expert explains why! “Most trees in urban or landscaped areas need to be pruned,” says Brian Crooks, WPC community forester & International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborist. "During winter, cold temperatures decrease the risk of pest and disease spread." However, pruning can harm trees if done incorrectly or at the wrong time of year. “There are professionally accepted ways to properly prune a tree, taking into account the location of the cut, method used, time of year and tools and their sanitation,” Brian says. When a tree or part of a tree fails, it can injure someone or damage property. You can reduce the risk of broken or falling limbs, and encourage trees to develop strong structure, by properly pruning them. (Pruning is not the same as tree topping. Tree topping is an improper practice that results in poor structure of regrowth and can result in tree failure.) Brian suggests a few things to consider when pruning a tree. 🖥️ Consult qualified sources such as Penn State Extension or Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. 🌳 OR hire a tree pruning professional who is certified by an industry-recognized professional organization, such as the International Society of Arboriculture. 🐞 Sanitize tools to prevent the spread of pests and diseases from one tree to another. ❄️ Prune during winter. Cold temperatures decrease the risk of pest and disease spread, when most pathogens are dormant or not present. Also, you can easily see canopies on most deciduous trees. 🚫 Allow trees to heal naturally. Don’t cover pruning wounds with paint or other dressings. Knowing your patch, or the old adage of the 'farmers foot' is arguably the best tool we have to get to know every nook and cranny of a farm. The wet patches, the hollow Oak, the 'hot spots', where the Kingfisher nests, where the Otter leaves his spraint.. Restorative farming is no different, probably more so. We are delighted to have acquired this new farm in the #DedhamVale and are incredibly excited about the opportunities it presents to restore #soil #biodiversity and restore #ecosystemservices like cleaning up #water flowing through the floodplain grazing meadows and the #RiverStour. These fields are part of the #nationallandscape and part of #Constablecountry so we also recognise their cultural value and we are already working with key stakeholders to preserve this heritage while creating and restoring habitats. As farmers we also recognise the need for our countryside to produce food and we will continue to do so, restoring the environment and food can and should go hand in hand. Getting to know this patch is one of life's pleasures.. Our existing #habitatbanks are well under way in #Tendring and #EastSuffolk to provide #carbon #BNG and ultimately water units in these planning authorities and relevant NCA's.
