Super excited that Forum is bringing nearly 600 new student housing beds to Guelph, where I was formerly a student. This really hits close to home given the very limited housing options both myself and other University of Guelph students faced. Often competing for rooms in converted residential homes that in some instances were in desperate need of some TLC. PBSA buildings such as this new development offer high-quality housing options geared specifically towards students. It is also my hope that as students gradually move to occupy these PBSA buildings, the residential homes they previously occupied will be open to house families. We need more of these student geared developments to help combat the housing crisis we are experiencing across the country, and especially in University / College cities. #PBSA #studenthousing

What is the agenda of Glasgow City Council? They are to make a decision on a 35 storey Student Housing tower at Charing Cross with 784 beds. ANOTHER student housing block? When all we hear is a lack of affordable housing, clearly something is wrong here if the only people looking to build in Glasgow are student housing operators. Why are private developers not looking at these opportunities to revitalize areas of the city and create communities? Students are here for 5 years maximum and then moving on. In the past ten years alone the number of student housing buildings that have been built is astonishing. And while they cater for a sector of the market, the conspirator in mean thinks that this is a business move by the Universities, offering more paid places to more students than ever before. Is this sustainable? Also, when you look at student housing, they are the same replicated throughout the UK. If you're sending your child off to a new City to start their education, I understand the security of a purpose built student block for the first year, but beyond that, let them live in the built environment of that city to absorb the true life of the City. I can't see how student housing is sustainable in it's current rate of building, or am I missing something here? https://lnkd.in/e5aDhGgt

Many universities want to grow their graduate student enrollments, which means that adequate living is required nearby -- but not necessarily on campus. It's important that during these developments, the entire community is kept in mind, particularly if it's built off-campus. As this article pointed out, it can be disruptive to local communities or not geared toward them, which isn't helping the local economy that much. Catering housing toward graduate students and leasing to businesses that could benefit the whole community is a smart move. Student housing is rental housing, after all, so keep in mind the similarities these markets have. Graduate students aren't likely to purchase a house, particularly if they don't plan to put down roots in the city they're getting their degree from. This makes renting very attractive, campus-leased or otherwise. #StudentHousing #RentalMarket #RealEstate

Plans are being progressed to convert what was once Monifieth Public School into 20 council homes. The development of Invertay House will create good quality, affordable housing that can improve the quality of life for residents by offering an environment that has positive benefits for health, financial stability and security. Originally built in 1878 as Monifieth Public School, Invertay House provided education for both primary and secondary pupils up until 1966 and then primary education alone until its closure in 1985. More recently the building was used as office space until it was closed in 2016. The Council has now submitted planning and listed building consent applications for social housing at the Maule Street site. Communities vice-Convener Kenny Braes said: “The Invertay House site holds a lot of history, and this new development will add to this even more by bringing a valuable new asset into the community by way of high-quality affordable homes. “Enabling the creation of much-needed new properties for social rent helps us to deliver our ambitious affordable housing targets." The conversion and development of Invertay House gives a new lease of life to a prominent and well-liked building in the heart of Monifieth and provides much needed affordable accommodation. The proposals incorporate a diverse mix of private, semi-private and public open green space to aid biodiversity, forms an attractive usable environment for the community and visitors and creates an enhanced landscape setting for the former school building. A new public garden is proposed at the North of the site next to Maule Street. As high-quality new homes, they will contribute to the Local Housing Strategy 2023-28 target of 76 new affordable homes each year in Angus by the Council and its Housing Association partners. The development currently sits within the latest Strategic Housing Investment Plan, which sets out the affordable housing investment priorities for the next five years in Angus. The planning application is now live. The following story seems to be the norm across the country, as not only the cost of tuition but the cost of safe, affordable student housing is rising as well. Of course, with student housing the story is more complicated, as supply and demand, zoning, historical preservation and other factors play a part. RICHMOND, VA - Virginia Commonwealth University is looking to continue to transform West Grace Street. The university is currently in the early stages of planning a new dormitory of 1,000-1,250 beds that would rise at 700 W. Grace St., according to university spokesman Mike Porter. The VCU Board of Visitors is expected this week to approve the addition of the project to the university’s six-year capital plan. If the project, identified as the West Grace Street Housing Project, is made part of VCU’s facilities plan, the university will then issue a request for proposals for the development. After the RFP solicitation, a finalized project scope and cost will be considered by the board, which would vote to authorize the project’s construction. The facility would feature apartment-style and semi-suite beds for undergraduates. Additional details like square footage and other specifications haven’t been determined yet and are expected to be hashed out as part of the RFP. A cost estimate still needs to be figured out. VCU intends to pay for the project with revenue generated by housing payments made by students. The project site is currently occupied by the university’s Facilities and Financial Services Building, and has previously been talked about as the site of a housing project specifically for honors students. The existing structure would be razed as part of the project. Porter said VCU is prioritizing this dorm project over the honors housing project, which remains on the university’s capital plan. VCU officials have previously said they intend to build a dorm with more beds than the current 177-bed honors housing facility that is across the street. The West Grace Street Housing Project is planned to be a separate and larger facility than the previously mentioned honors dorm, and the honors-specific housing could potentially be co-located on the site, Porter said. Plans for the West Grace Street Housing Project come after VCU secured the final bit of the 700 block of West Grace Street last year. The university’s real estate foundation spent $3.5 million last May to acquire the BookHolders property at 720 W. Grace St. with the intention to knock it down for student housing. In 2022, VCU demolished the neighboring former home of Sally Bell’s Kitchen at 708 W. Grace St. in preparation for the honors housing project, and the university said at the time it intended to also demolish the next-door Facilities and Financial Services Building for that same project, though the building was still standing this week. VCU is also planning a renovation of Johnson Hall at 801 W. Franklin St. The dorm has been shuttered since 2021, when it closed due to concerns about mold that have since been addressed.
