Worth revisiting this 18-minute speech from 1962. A Ted Sorensen product with a JFK delivery that kicks ass! “While reading the speech is one thing, the passion and urgency of the speech is most noticeable when it is listened to..” -NARA. Interestingly the concept of expenditure in the text comes up (@ 14:25 in the film), comparing the budget of 50 cents, per person, per week, as astronomical, or about what Americans were spending on tobacco products annually at the time. (You can see some of those products in use in the background, with the suits and ties in the Houston heat!) And while it is still fashionable to question the money allocated to project Apollo in a zero sum that sapped resources from worthy social programs. There is some evidence that for every dollar spent pursuing the science of space, there was a seven dollar return on investment. No teleprompter at play here, and at end Kennedy goes off script, as the flag waves.

Since it was an establishment of high repute, I thought it was the right place for would-be scientists, but it turned out to be a magnet for ambitious mediocres whose only aim was to get a degree from Imperial, which they believed would land them good jobs.  Unfortunately, mediocrity was rife at all levels: the department of chemistry was run by mediocres, and so they were all too happy to dumb down the course content to cater for the needs of the majority. As a result, I got a worthless degree and spent long years doing menial jobs.  It seems to me that in the last thirty odd years the college has only got better at self-aggrandising and talking big, and it is still obsessed with its rankings. Well, this talk about rankings belies the simple truth that universities are no longer elite institutions. Instead, they have become production lines and they are in the business of churning out graduates. Thus, these days the educational process at these institutions is rather like intensive farming: students are fed easily digestible chunks of information, which can easily be regurgitated in exams . This age will go down in history as the age of mediocrity.
