🚨 Rising Concern: Maternity Care Deserts and Maternal Mortality 🏥👶 A recent article from Becker's Hospital Review highlights a troubling trend: the closure of maternity services at several hospitals in 2024, leading to an increase in maternity care deserts. These closures are exacerbating the challenge of accessing essential care for expectant mothers. In the U.S., where the maternal mortality rate remains alarmingly high at 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births (CDC, 2021), the impact of these closures cannot be underestimated. Addressing this issue is critical to improving outcomes and ensuring every mother receives the care she needs. Solutions such as telehealth services, mobile clinics, and community-based support are vital in bridging these gaps and combating rising maternal mortality rates. Read the full article to understand the implications of these closures and the urgent need for effective solutions: https://buff.ly/3MtiBC4 #MaternityCare #MaternalMortality #HealthcareAccess #MaternityCareDeserts #HealthcareSolutions #Telehealth #CommunitySupport #HealthEquity

The gaps in rural maternity care mean that patients must travel long distances to reach the nearest hospital that can serve them. The travel time to a hospital with labor and delivery services in rural areas is likely to be at least 30 minutes, though it’s often 40 minutes or more, according to the report. That’s in contrast to less than 20 minutes in most urban areas. In New Mexico, the median driving time to a hospital with obstetric services is 61 minutes and in Alaska it’s more than 90 minutes.

ATAIN - The acronym for Avoidable Term Admissions Into Neonatal Units. Improving the safety of maternity services is a key priority for the NHS and reducing admission of full-term babies to neonatal care is an indicator in the NHS Outcomes Framework for 2016 to 2017. Michele Upton - Head of Maternity and Neonatal Transformation Programmes at NHS Improvement presented her insights into ATAIN and 4 reasons why minimising separation is important; 👉🏽The first hour of life following birth is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – not replicable - to be protected. 👉🏽Mothers and babies have a physiological and emotional need to be together: hours and days following birth. 👉🏽Important for physiological stability of baby and initiation of maternal infant interaction. 👉🏽There is overwhelming evidence that separation of mother and baby so soon after birth interrupts the normal bonding process, which can have a profound and lasting effect on maternal mental health, breastfeeding, long-term morbidity for mother and child. This makes preventing separation, except for compelling medical reasons, an essential practice in maternity services and an ethical responsibility for healthcare professionals. Our flagship product, the mOm Essential Incubator, is a portable, compact, and lightweight infant incubator offering a safe thermoregulated environment for newborns to thrive in. We deliver simple, effective, and reliable technology solutions that can operate anywhere from remote & rural birth, intra-hospital transport, and transitional care through to neonatal units across the spectrum of designation and capability. The article from Time highlights a concerning trend in the United States: the closure of maternity wards, especially in rural and underserved urban areas. Over the past decade, more than 200 hospitals have shut down their obstetric units, creating "maternity care deserts" where access to necessary prenatal and delivery services is severely limited. The primary reasons for these closures include financial pressures, workforce shortages, and declining birth rates. Additionally, hospitals that serve a higher proportion of Medicaid patients, who typically reimburse at lower rates, are more susceptible to these cuts. This crisis exacerbates health inequities, particularly affecting low-income and minority communities. In urban areas like Southeast Washington, D.C., the loss of maternity wards has forced pregnant individuals to travel long distances for care, posing significant challenges for those without reliable transportation. Research indicates that these closures contribute to a two-tiered healthcare system, where marginalized groups receive care from underfunded and overcrowded facilities, further straining the system and impacting maternal and infant health outcomes. BobiHealth aims to address these critical issues by developing an accessible, intelligent monitoring and alerting solution for pregnant individuals. By leveraging technology, BobiHealth seeks to ensure continuous and proactive healthcare management, mitigating the risks associated with limited access to maternity care. This solution is particularly vital in areas affected by maternity ward closures, providing a crucial lifeline to those who would otherwise face significant barriers to receiving timely and effective prenatal and delivery care. Check out the article on Time's website: [Time - Maternity Ward Closures in the US] https://lnkd.in/gdFAgqhJ. Thank you for sharing this insightful article David Lee, it is another reaffirmation that I and BobiHealth are on an important mission.
