The modern-day university is a thoroughly complex affair that comprises of numerous interlocking research activities that inform the delivery of an equally complex portfolio of learning programmes. This contemporary model of a university is a far cry from university education envisioned by the noted educational philosopher Cardinal John Henry Newman. As Newman’s Oratory (https://lnkd.in/efuqzewq) is a few minutes away from Aston University I tend to pop in and wander around the grounds on those rare moments I find myself with time to spare. In his early work on the nature and purposes of a University, Newman was clear that a university should be a place where students would  “. . . see things as they are, to go right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought to detect what is sophistical and to discard what is irrelevant.”. Although, Newman’s philosophy is at the heart of universities across the globe, the day-to-day reality of delivering his core principles within the context of a modern-day university is such that a casual observer might not see how a graduate should be able to develop the skills that Newman originally espoused. Engaging students in the research activities of modern universities can fulfil Newman's vision of an education that fosters critical thinking. The central positioning of research activity as a fundamental process within the undergraduate culture is central to the success of the university. Today marks the official conferral of my doctorate at the University of Zurich 🥳 In my doctoral thesis “Jenseits der nationalen Narrative. Ausstellungsräume zeitgenössischer türkischer Kunst als heterotopische Handlungsorte (Beyond the national narratives. Exhibition spaces of contemporary Turkish art as heterotopic action fields)”, I discuss based on contemporary art exhibitions between 2009 and 2015 in Turkey how curatorial and artistic positions can challenge in an environment of limited freedom of speech the concepts of national history and identity, and furthermore create sometimes an abstract, sometimes a direct, provoking and vivid space where alternative collective memories and upheavals in the history divergent from hegemonial narratives become visible. In my 10-years-research, I did not only conduct an extensive documentation of contemporary art and art institutions in Turkey, but also dealt deeply with identity and gender discourses, as well as with cultural and social politics in Turkey. My passion and curiosity for art, culture, diversity and politics will accompany me also in my future academic and professional endeavours 🌊✨
