Advancing our understanding of Fibrosis in Crohn's disease with the Support of The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the generous support from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, our team at KU Leuven, led by Prof. Gianluca Matteoli, in collaboration with the IBD Leuven team and the lab of Prof. Guy Boeckxstaens is poised to make significant impact on intestinal fibrosis. With this project, we aim at identifying novel therapeutic targets that are responsible for the development of fibrosis in the gut with possible impact also on other organs, including the liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, and skin. This partnership represents a fundamental step towards addressing this unmet clinical need for patients suffering from IBD. We look forward to working closely with The Leona M. and Harry B. n recognition of rare disease day we want you to meet the real people affected by NF2 • 3.5 million people in the UK and 30 million people across Europe have a rare disease. • Rare diseases disproportionately impact children • In the UK as a whole around 1500 people have NF2, there are about 900 of us in England We are each affected differently but are linked together by our rare disorder NF2 related Schwannomatosis (NF2). People with NF2 are affected by Brain Tumours, Spine Tumours, Optical Tumours, Deafness, Blindness, Epilepsy, vocal chord paralysis, mobility problems, chronic pain, cataracts, facial palsy ... & much more! Today we meet Liene who was diagnosed with NF2 at 19 years old and her tumours were big at that time leading to increased pressure in her brain. "I was advised to get Avastin treatments. I was happy to get that help, because first when I was introduced to Avastin, they were a little bit reluctant because of the side effects on a young person like me. But this would mean that I’d get some more years without surgeries ... I moved to Norway, and was asked if I have plans of starting a family some day, and that was the first time they warned me about getting pregnant while on Avastin because it can cause severe damage to the baby" NF2 is a life long genetic condition There is no beginning, middle or ending to any of our stories, no remission or breaks. Treatment options are surgery/radiosurgery/chemotherapy which often results in loss of function of the involved nerve. The OPTN's Expeditious Task Force has established their goal of 60,000 successful, lifesaving deceased donor transplants annually by the end of 2026. From July 2022 to July 2023, annual deceased donor transplants grew by about 4,000 (~34,500 to ~38,500). However from July 2023 to July 2024, annual deceased donor transplant growth slowed to only about 2,000 (~38,500 to ~40,500). If deceased donor transplants continue to grow by only 2,000 per year, we would reach about 45,500 by the end of 2026, well shy of the Expeditious Task Force's goal of 60,000 (and this is assuming all of these transplants are "successful" and "lifesaving"). 60,000 successful, lifesaving deceased donor transplants by the end of 2026 is, indeed, a bold goal, but the recent slowing of deceased donor transplant growth doesn't bode well for its success. March is Women’s History Month! It’s also Endometriosis Awareness Month! For those who don’t know, Endometriosis is a debilitating disease in which uterine-like tissues grow out of place and become inflamed during a woman's menstrual cycle even though the tissues are outside the uterus. The symptoms are varied and brutal, often causing high levels of pain and psychological distress. You might think it’s rare, you’d be wrong. It affects a whopping 1 in 10 women. Surely, our healthcare system is equipped to deal with such a disease, you’d ask. You’d be wrong again. The worst part of endometriosis is that it can take on average 7-8 years to get a correct diagnosis. 7-8 years to be told there’s no cure, only pain mangement and surgery. Thankfully, good folks like Endometriosis UK are working hard to bring awareness to all and support to the many women affliced by this terrible disease. That is why for the entire month of April (due to travels in March) I will be cycling a minimum of 1,000 km to raise £3,500 for Endometriosis UK.
