Today, I’m sharing the story of Muddis, one of my favourite patients, and his journey with limbic encephalitis—a condition that gained widespread attention through the film and book "Brain on Fire." Limbic encephalitis is an inflammatory disorder that targets the limbic system of the brain. It can be autoimmune or paraneoplastic in nature, leading to a range of neurological and behavioural signs. In some countries feline limbic encephalitis is called feline complex partial cluster seizure with orofacial involvement (FEPSO) or Feline hippocampal and piriform lobe necrosis (FHN). In this video, I also discuss the process of diagnosing limbic encephalitis, introducing my three-tier level of confidence in diagnosis. Furthermore, I delve into the management strategies for Muddis and pets like him. #BrainOnFire #LimbicEncephalitis #AutoimmuneDisorders #Neurology #MedicalJourney #PatientStories #BrainHealth #InflammatoryDisorders #Neuroinflammation #AutoimmuneEncephalitis #ParaneoplasticSyndrome #VeterinaryMedicine #FEPSO #FelineHealth #CatNeurology #MedicalDiagnosis #HealthEducation #MedicalManagement #NeurologicalDisorders #MedicalStories https://lnkd.in/ePPHcwQr

Some personal news... 🧠 Much to my surprise, shortly before Christmas I was diagnosed with a benign pituitary tumour. For those who don’t know, the pituitary gland is basically a small stalk at the bottom of the brain that controls hormones. My tumour is about the size of a blueberry, which sounds alright but is comparatively quite big when compared to the fact the gland itself is very small. It’s currently affecting my hormones and could also cause issues with my vision, diabetes, cardiac issues etc. if left untreated. The important thing is that whilst saying "brain" and "tumour" in the same sentence is quite scary, it isn't cancerous. Although it's relatively serious, it's more likely to affect 'life goals' than 'life expectancy'. I’m on tablets to try and shrink the tumour but may need brain surgery and radiotherapy in the future. A decision on treatments will be made over the next few weeks/months depending on blood tests and other scans etc. My reason for posting is to try and create a bit of awareness and share some thoughts on my 'journey'. Approximately 1 in 10,000 men have the same type of tumour as me, but there isn't a huge lot of material online. Having spoken with The Pituitary Foundation, and with working for Macmillan Cancer Support, I've decided to document my experiences through a Facebook blog; my view is that services will never change and improve unless people speak up about both their positive and negative experiences. For example; One positive: Our wonderful NHS and its staff, who have been caring and compassionate throughout the process 👏 One negative: Having an app notification telling me my diagnosis before speaking to a doctor! 😲 If you want to give the blog a follow head over to https://lnkd.in/emn_yJwD #blog #health #pituitary #brainhealth #nhs #brain

I've just covered some exciting news here at the #HawaiianEyeMeeting. Calvin Roberts, MD, announced the launch of a project from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) that aims to finally find a way to successfully transplant a whole human eye. This has never been done before — Dr. Roberts described the endeavor as being comparable to "transplanting a piece of brain." If you are interested in learning more about this big shake up to the #Ophthalmology world or are wondering how you may be able to get involved in the project, check out the full story, and all of Healio's Hawaiian Eye coverage, below!
