The summary of my presentation is clear: According to the Ellen Macarthur Report on the global reduction of plastic packaging pollution through recycling, reusing, and composting, we have seen a decline in overall recycling rates by 1.2% from 2021 to 2022. Reuse and composting rates remain stagnant at 0%. Plastic production and consumer demand continue to increase at a rate far exceeding our recycling efforts. While there have been improvements in certain areas, it is evident that the current strategy will never be sufficient to curb plastic environmental pollution. The root causes are too obvious to ignore: 1. Plastics are only recycled when there is an established circular economy around a specific type. Most polymers have no associated recycling value and are therefore not recycled. 2. To address this, we need to reach a consensus on the environmental costs of these plastics and assign these costs to the producers. This will generate the necessary funds to ensure proper recycling systems are functional. 3. We must stop falling for misleading claims from recyclers about bioplastics contaminating their streams. Despite having over 20 years to adapt their systems to handle PLA, no significant action has been taken, even though the technology is available. Just complaints. 4. PHA with 100% biodegradability in marine conditions is essential as a fail-safe mechanism for the current 19 million tons of plastic that accumulate in the environment. Simply switching to denser petroleum-based plastics to ensure they sink out of sight is not a solution. 5. Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) brands are not the sole culprits in creating these problems, though they are not helping either. They rarely commit to change unless it is mandated by laws, which they often lobby against, can be leveraged into a marketing campaign to drive sales, or is seen as a cost-saving measure. Few brands are genuinely interested in solving the issue. However, petrochemical companies must be held accountable for producing these materials without any responsibility for their negative impact. A global tax on every kilogram of petro-plastic produced to help pay for cleaning up this mess is a better place to start. And for those laws that now require minimal recycled content, how do you even enforce this? Large CPGs are currently claiming to use 100% RPET, while the best recycling rates in very small geographical areas reach 65%. So where does all this RPET magically come from? But most importantly, stop confusing "recyclable" with "recycled." One is a fairy tale; the other is action. https://lnkd.in/g3FHDHYJ #greenwashing #Recycling #sustainability #RPET

Rendering plays a key role in the bioeconomy -- a critical component of a circular economy. Our Director - Technology, and Chairman of EFPRA Sustainability Committee, Richard van Lijssel, is unparalleled in articulating the interconnection between the bioeconomy and overall circular economy, as demonstrated at this year's European Fat Processors and Renderers Association's Congress. Richard highlighted the critical role of rendering within both, emphasizing how we empower customers by providing access to low-carbon ingredients that support our food system and also help our customers and society achieve decarbonization goals. #Sustainability #Bioeconomy #CircularEconomy #Decarbonization
