WHEN DID YOU KNOW? We were all doing what we do now when we were 10 years old. Kind of… Long before reading resumes, interviewing interns, production prospects, and skilled tradespeople, there was GI Joe. This is what a lobby full of applicants looked like when I was in 4th grade- a red, plastic collector case. Some of the first teams I put together were for backyard rescue missions. Each Joe had a file card with their skill set, personality profile, pay grade, and hobbies. My younger brother and I would read about each action figure and then decide if they were a good fit for the job. A soldier dressed in arctic gear rarely was sent to the desert. However, if they could drive a dune buggy or hack into a Cobra mainframe it was a real plus. Now and then, colleagues and I will chat about when we knew the type of work we wanted to do. Engineers will talk about a remote control car they modified in the 5th grade. I have met a few electricians too, that fixed a toaster during summer break or programmed a garage door opener. It is important that we all look back at when we started down our career path. Reconnecting with what makes our craft satisfying will bring back memories. Many probably started towards the end of elementary school. Be proud of your career and remember where you come from. Job satisfaction is a true blessing. And knowing is half the battle!

Speaking in general from brand perspective, because its what people interact and connect to everyday. As a creative director you help shape from the brand strategy to the visual execution. By taking into account all the emotional elements of a brand, connecting them to the business objectives and giving them cultural context to where and how they will connect to people. As well as managing the company responsibility and your personal ethics.

I was paid professionally to look back. I loved doing Win/Loss analysis for our biggest deals at our IT services org (Rich Thomas James Sloan Kristin Wehe Langley Downs - I’m looking at you). I would talk to clients both won and lost, and our internal sales teams to find out and then report back what we did well, what we did wrong and how we could improve. This type of postmortem analysis bled over into my personal life as well. I’m already thinking of bullet points of how we could’ve done things differently on a recent move to help our adult offspring 🥸 (Takeaway #1: Learn to freely let them adult). I love and encourage feedback to this day via project post mortems with my teams. I know self reflection on a recent presentation I made will go toward improving my abilities. But I can’t bring myself to review the tape (I’ve read where some actors can’t watch dailies during film making so maybe this is similar?) Where are you on reviewing your own “scary” work products after you’ve crossed the finish line?

As someone who is in their 15th year of active duty service, life had directed me towards finding a life outside of duty days and endlessly repetitive work. It’s overwhelming when you dive into a site like LinkedIn where it feels like you are trying to simultaneously listen to 5 audio books on self improvement while another dozen neon signs for “premier employment” shine amidst an unexplored path ahead. What are some tips you would give to someone who is navigating this platform and trying to foster mutually beneficial relationships and, “illuminate the street lamps ahead”, so to speak?

If they don't appreciate what you bring to the table, then let them eat themselves. Loyalty? Loyalty is supposed to be a two-way street. You should be loyal to your employer, but your employer should also be loyal to you. This means that your employer should provide you with a safe and supportive work environment, and they should offer you opportunities for growth and development. It is important to be loyal to your employer, but it is also important to remember that you have your own needs and interests. You should not let your loyalty to your employer come at the expense of your own well-being. And also, you need to define clearly, are you being loyal or just being comfort? If you are experiencing any quiet quitting signs, it may be time to have a conversation with your manager or to start looking for a new job. In the content of development, what is the most important asset of the organization? That was the question of my panelist during my oral revalida in 2016. And the answer is employees...knowing the value of people within the organization will help us make better decisions. We shouldn't allow people to feel manipulated or taken for granted. For a creative person there is no clear road to success or promotion and there are no obvious or defined milestones to indicate progress. There are few if any mentors to assist, guide and teach you, and there are no financial bonuses or annual graded pay increases that people in traditional jobs receive as they move up the career ladder of ‘success’. In a world where job status and job titles are markers for success, intelligence, financial security and the like, it is no wonder creative people often struggle with self- esteem issues and feel under-valued.
