As far as we know, we are the first to design, engineer, and manufacture an IP56 outdoor enclosure for the massive 315kW ABB ACQ580-34 drive module [Ultra Low Harmonic (ULH) Variable Speed Drive (VSD)]. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 • 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦: A utility customer faced the challenge of replacing a recently flooded VSD cabinet for a Sewerage Pump Station (SPS). • 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: SPS is situated on a flood plain and installed on a 6m platform, making a switchroom unsuitable. It is also near residential properties. • 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫: Tier 1 Contractor working for a Utility Authority. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 PTAS designed, engineered, and manufactured an IP56 outdoor enclosure for the 315kW ABB ACQ580-34 ULH-VSD. Key components of our solution include: • 𝐀𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐬: These fans operate at lower speeds to minimise noise disturbance for nearby residents. • 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬: Conducted by WSP to ensure compliance and minimal environmental disruption. The design of pylons was the winning entry in a competition, run by the CEB, or The Central Electricity Board, back in 1927. Leading architect Sir Reginald Blomfield often gets the credit for the 'lattice' design. But the winning design, which still strides across our landscape today, was submitted to the competition by the Milliken Brothers, an engineering company based in the US, and chosen by Blomfield, designer of London’s Lambeth Bridge. Pylons are used to support the overhead network that transmits high-voltage, electricity from where is generated to where it can be distributed. Power stations generate low voltage around 10 to 30 kV. Electricity then passes through step-up transformer at a transmission substation to create HV, which is up to 400,000 V, travelling around the National Grid transmission network. High voltage allows for greater efficiency and less energy loss. A step-down transformer in a substation is used to lower the voltage before distribution. DNOs connect the transmission network to where the electricity is used.
