In life, most of us strive to be the best versions of ourselves, and for those of us in the #recycling and #waste industry, we often try to leave the world better than we found it by doing our part to make a difference. This desire to do good is seen through acts like philanthropy, planting trees, volunteering services, leading cleanups, reusing materials and, you guessed it, recycling. However, ensuring materials are recycled properly can be challenging as recycling is not one size fits all, and the concept can be skewed due to many factors. #Sustainable #living: Plastic waste to #mats. On my way for an early morning meeting, crossing the streets at the CBD and seeing several street guys deep asleep on the floor. Was reminded how for some reasons I didn't sleep so well last night yet I was in a comfortable bed. Then I came across this video of a group of men and women making sleeping mats from plastic bags waste for the homeless people. They donate the mats to them. The mats are quite simple to make and does not take a lot of time. Anyone can learn to make them and bless a homeless person somewhere especially those in the streets. While organizations, governments and individuals strategize on dealing with the influx of street people, there seems to be many challenges to overcome. How about a short term solution to provide such upcycled sleeping mats so they can have a good sleep even on the streets? Better still, how about teaching them to collect plastic bags or non-woven bags waste to make their own sleeping mats? Every human being deserve to live in dignity including living a dignified life on the streets. While most people understand poor sustainability practices negatively impact the environment, it can be difficult to make the jump to understand the large effect our own small actions have when they add up with others’. How much damage can one plastic straw do? Does using one plastic bag for take-out really matter?    There are 500 million plastic straws used in the U.S. every day. Although using one straw seems harmless, when you think about the number of straws used in the U.S. in only one day, that seemingly harmless one-time use ends up being billions of used straws each year.   It’s important to make a personal connection to find meaning in taking sustainable actions.
