This week has seen some big movement in the Simpler Recycling policy. As part of Simpler Recycling, most councils are required to implement weekly food waste collections by 31 March 2026. Defra has now announced it is providing £295 million in funding for local authorities to support them to introduce these collections. This week, a survey by the Local Government Association has also found that 67% of local authorities are not confident they will hit their net zero targets. Ahead of the latest special edition of Circular which celebrates CIWM’s 125th anniversary and dives into the fine print of Simpler Recycling policy to understand the next steps for the sector, Circular Online unpacks these developments in detail in this video: #circulareconomy #sustainability #foodwaste #SimplerRecycling

Last year we changed our Sprite South Africa packaging to a bold and green recycling-friendly product, switching out to a clear bottle for Sprite. Creating a #WorldWithoutWaste is our TOP priority, it’s part of our sustainability journey to partner with government and local authorities to keep our planet clean. We’re committed to making a positive impact within the communities where we operate, to promote a circular economy for plastic packaging and recycling. Not Biodiversity, just plastics taking a swim. A classic representation of the externalisation of the cost of managing plastic waste. Downstream communities have to deal with tonnes of plastic waste from products manufactured, used and discarded elsewhere. This raises critical questions on jurisdictions of Extended Producer Responsibility programs. Equally, though labled recyclable, the low recycling rates (<10%) tell us otherwise on the practicality of that solution.

I was amazed to learn that milk jugs can be recycled up to seven times! Milk jugs are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), one of the most desirable plastics for recycling, which can find new life as plastic toys, outdoor furniture and more. Yet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that people recycle fewer than 3 in 10 milk. As someone who works at Dairy Farmers of America, I’m passionate about sustainability and I encourage everyone to join #DFAInAction to help give plastics a second life. It’s easier than you think! Just rinse your plastic milk jugs out and toss them in the recycling bin instead of the trash. Let’s work together to give milk jugs a new life and create a more sustainable future.
