Is this the best Cornwall Council can do for #careleavers in #Cornwall? It brings a whole new meaning to #sinkestates. Units for homeless young people near Waitrose store Cornwall Council wants to site ten modular homes near the Waitrose store in Truro to provide accommodation for vulnerable young people who would otherwise be homeless or threatened with homelessness and need support. Kendall Kingscott has been appointed by Arcadis to prepare and submit a planning application on behalf of the council for the installation of the one-bedroom SoloHaus units on land near Truro Cattle Market and the Tregurra park and ride on Newquay Road in the city. The homes would be for young adults, aged between 18 and 25, transitioning from children's services and may include those leaving care. As well as the modular homes - similar to homeless pods seen at various sites throughout Cornwall - there would be a residents hub and management office, plant rooms to heat the units and any required landscaping work.

There's a misconception that public camping ordinances - and the #SCOTUS ruling in Grants Pass - criminalize the status of being #homeless. They don't. This quote from a County Supervisor gets it right: “Enforcement of anti-camping ordinances is not meant to criminalize homelessness, but rather a critical tool to encourage individuals on our streets and parks to accept the services within our system of care. Encampment prohibitions ensure safe and accessible sidewalks, parks, and public spaces, and in some cases prevent wildfires, litter and destruction of nature preserves." “The Supreme Court’s decision today allows the county and our impacted cities to continue efforts to move people from encampments to shelter, treatment, wraparound care, and ultimately permanent supportive housing.” #codeenforcement #calcities #caceo #aace #housing #healthyhousing #homeless #homelessness #legalnews #truthmatters #localgov #municipal #citymanager #publicsafety League of California Cities National League of Cities WICED of California Women in Code Enforcement and Development of Texas, WICED of TX California Association Of Code Enforcement Officers International Code Council ICC Orange Empire Chapter Ventura Region Chapter of ICC ICC Region II American Association of Municipal Executives American Association of Code Enforcement https://lnkd.in/gXW3DBxu

Mayor Whitmire recently announced plans to remove Highway 59's iconic overpass lights near downtown Houston, citing the $2.5M maintenance cost as funds that could support homeless initiatives. As someone deeply involved in homeless advocacy – leading Houston Justice and serving on the board of Texas ID Advocates – I must respectfully challenge this decision. We've already lost the Galleria's silver halo street signs, and now these beloved bridge lights. Our international city is losing its distinctive character, piece by piece, under the guise of fiscal responsibility. Here's the reality: Houston just announced an additional $100M initiative for homeless services, including designated camping spaces – a comprehensive plan I fully support. Homelessness sits at the intersection of mental health, criminal justice, poverty, and housing accessibility. It requires sophisticated, multi-faceted solutions. The $2.5M in question is a fraction of our city's budget. While it would barely impact our homeless initiatives, removing these lights significantly diminishes our urban landscape. We shouldn't have to choose between being a vibrant city and a compassionate one – these goals complement each other. A city that maintains its cultural appeal generates more economic activity and ultimately more resources for social programs. Mayor Whitmire, please reconsider. Houston can keep its lights on while brightening the prospects of our most vulnerable residents. [News link in comments #Houston #Homelessness #UrbanDevelopment #Community

A 'boots on the ground' perspective. Powerful, worth reading through. From article... Please help. Speak to your city council members. Your county council members. Ask them who they are funding and why. Ask them the price difference between sweeping encampments and offering help, between trashing people’s possessions and providing weekly trash/sanitation services, between offering unhoused humans a legitimate path out of homelessness and forcing them under threat of arrest to move two blocks away so the space they previously occupied can be replaced with big rocks. Repeat process, repeat process. Again and again and again. Ask them why we pretend like we don’t know how to fix this. Ask them who benefits. #advocacy #homelessness #humanrights https://lnkd.in/giQUQK45
