My first customer services job was ensuring that clients were well informed about their medical aid benefits. Medical claims, correspondence, authorisations, etc. This was prior to the age of straight through claims processing, on demand correspondence/certificates, etc. A few things I learned along the way: 1. Losing sight of the daily goals or trying to multitask made it difficult to meet the weekly targets. 2. Dealing with health issues needs a ton of empathy. No one wants to hear that they are unable to book a doctor or that their claim was rejected. 3. Miscommunications is like sending a client to the wrong doctor. I learnt early on that being clear, concise and summarising at the end of the call went a long way to ensure I was understood. Do you remember the lessons your first job taught you?

NHS Resolution's Annual Report for 2023/24 shows remarkable progress in dispute resolution, with 81% of claims in England resolved without resorting to legal proceedings. This means over 10,800 cases were settled through dispute resolution rather than formal legal processes. The report further unveils that £2.8 billion was paid out for compensation and associated costs, with 41% or £1.15 billion relating to maternity-related payments. By prioritising alternative dispute resolution methods, the organisation is able to not only save time and money for all involved, but also prioritise the well-being of patients and their families.
