WMSCOG Bay Walk Park Cleanup Long Island, NY #WMSCOG #baywalkparkcleanup #longislandny PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK — On July 28th, 2024, 27 volunteers of the World Mission Society Church of God are cleaning up the marine ecosystem at Bay Walk Park in partnership with the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee. In 2015 the United Nations adopted the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development and created the 17 Sustainable Development Goals we now have. This cleanup not only helps the environment on a local level but also supports 3 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable goals [SDG’s]. The Manhasset Bay Protection Committee’s goals aligned with our goals to aid in the conservation of wildlife and the well-being of all mankind, locally, nationally and globally. As a matter of fact, this is the World Mission Society's 8,170th global cleanup. https://lnkd.in/gtc3W9u8

Rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns are already impacting outdoor activities. To adapt, the 2024 draft SCORP proposes advancing climate-resilient recreation and conservation through an improved understanding of climate impacts, collaboration with land managers, integrating natural hazard response plans, and implementing climate-resilient conservation projects. Have you been keeping up with Earth Week? The Biden Administration has finalized several initiatives that include protections for 245 million acres of public land, investments in the American Climate Corps, and conserving important land and water in Alaska. Outdoor Alliance has been offering ideas about how the administration and Congress can work to benefit climate, conservation, and outdoor recreation access. Recreation continues to be a vital voice in championing conservation and in helping to shape the future of public lands and waters that is sustainable, resilient, and equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century. This week is the culmination of years of work, advocacy, public outreach, and good ideas for protecting the outdoors. How can we make #mangrove #policies realize their potential and actually work for communites in the Southwestern Indian Ocean? A new policy brief digs into this very question 🌱 ⬇️

A recent SWIO regional policy review conducted by WWF has found that countries have developed national policies to provide communities with rights and benefits in natural resource management, including mangroves. However, realising these rights and benefits faces several challenges, including tensions arising from duplicate or ambiguous policies, limited institutional and financial capacity to support policy intentions and a lack of coordinated support to expand and sustain community-based mangrove management. Conservation that is #communityled is a cornerstone of WWF-SWIO’s work in #SWIO. Although having these policies in place provides us with a springboard to reach our 2030 goal of 20 million hectares of community-managed area, we first need to address the obstacles to realising community rights and benefits in mangrove management. As such, WWF has provided several recommendations to navigate and improve the policy landscape for strengthened community rights and benefits in mangrove management. These recommendations include developing and finalising a regional mangrove strategy and action plan that addresses policy pitfalls, clarifies the concept of community rights in mangrove management and supports national mangrove management strategies. **Monday Thought: Environmental Responsibility** In the counties where I fish most often in southern Michigan, they have taken an important step by installing fishing line recycling tubes. 🎣 St. Joseph County Parks, Indiana, have had these recycling tubes near their ponds for several years. As responsible fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts, let's commit to disposing of our used fishing line properly. By keeping these items out of parking lots, waterways, and shorelines, we prevent wildlife from getting entangled. Let's lead by example as families and groups and teach others at the same time.
