Freshness in perspectives, detail in ideas and humility in admitting personal struggles is what I witnessed the #LASSI, Liberal Arts and Sciences Symosium organised by ScooNews. It was wonderful to hear the educators talk about music in stimulating neurons, aesthetics and art in stimulating interest in Sciences and Math and Philosophy in developing critical and ethical reasoning. I spoke about soul development by immersing deeper in the object of study and understanding one’s relationship with it. Active learning to solve problems requires multilateral perspectives and skills. Classrooms that can do this look like Socratic spaces, helping the learners with an alternate view and educators who listen actively and compassionately. Undoubtedly, this leads us to investing in T-shaped learning, something that might cause the pace of syllabus in schools to slow. The school leaders, teachers and university teachers of today are quite involved in whole child development which is a very encouraging trend. Purpose of education is being redefined as discovering of inner being for the learner. I do hope that liberal education permeates in all classrooms soon. Thank you Jacob Thomas for creating a stimulating space that inspires, Reena Gupta for sharing the stage, Vardan Kabra for the joyful ride and conversation, Anil Srinivasan for highly refreshing ideas and delivery, Neesha Bhakar for sharing the biggest idea for conscious capitalism in education and Ravi Santlani for continuing to create spaces for interesting dialogues.

Gus Lunde '24, an Environmental Sciences major and Honors College student, designed a thesis that centered two of his passions: biking and birding. His advice for current or prospective Rubenstein School students? "There are a million things going on outside of your classes that can help you realize what it is or what it isn’t that you want to do. Getting out there, putting some effort into introducing yourself to your professors, showing up for opportunities and putting yourself out there is key." There’s been a lot of chatter about commencement speeches lately, and it’s reminded me of this gem from last year. What stands out to me especially is this segment (a bit of a read, I know!): “The best way to spot an idiot, look for the person who is cruel. Let me explain. When we see someone who doesn't look like us, or sound like us, or act like us, or love like us, or live like us, the first thought that crosses almost everyone's brain is rooted in either fear or judgement or both. That's evolution. We survived as a species by being suspicious of things that we aren't familiar with. In order to be kind, we have to shut down that animal instinct and force our brain to travel a different pathway. Empathy and compassion are evolved states of being. They require the mental capacity to step past our most primal urges. This may be a surprising assessment because somewhere along the way in the last few years, our society has come to believe that weaponized cruelty is part of some well-thought out Master plan. Cruelty is seen by some as an adroit cudgel to gain power. Empathy and kindness are considered weak. Many important people look at the vulnerable only as rungs on a ladder to the top. I'm here to tell you that when someone's path through this world is marked with acts of cruelty, they have failed the first test of an advanced society. They never forced their animal brain to evolve past its first instinct. They never forged new mental pathways to overcome their own instinctual fears. And so their thinking and problem solving will lack the imagination and creativity that the kindest people have in spades. Over my many years in politics and business, I have found one thing to be universally true. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest.” The value of kindness cannot be overstated. The best leaders I’ve ever had are all people who I would first describe as kind, followed by brilliant, innovative, and honest. Go out there today and be good to people, and look for the other kind people and make it a point to connect with them. You won’t regret it.
