The Annual Alliance for International Exchange Conference this year was truly exceptional, and I'm feeling the urge to reflect on why it felt that way. Heading into a quarter century of attending more international education and cultural exchange conferences than I can count, I think many would agree that the most valuable part of these events is the opportunity for engaging and open discussion with peers on topics that are of immediate importance to our community. At this year's Alliance Conference, this was prioritized by adding additional time to every panel session to allow increased discussion and Q&A, particularly with our #BridgeUSA colleagues at ECA. Additionally, every plenary event included ample time for multiple questions from the audience, resulting in interesting and unexpected dialogue. And the guests from these plenaries were well-chosen, often representing adjacent sectors, which served to highlight the opportunity for coalition-building in our field, which I firmly believe is the most important and effective tool we have for spreading the message of the positive impact of people-to-people cultural exchange. And then on top of this refreshing conference experience, the BridgeUSA Open House at the Department of State continued this theme by holding completely open discussions with #J1 sponsors, with, as far as I can tell, nearly all ECA staff participating in one way or another. My favorite conferences are the ones that value the quality of engagement over the quantity of topics addressed, and this was a perfect example of that approach. I truly appreciate the Alliance team, ECA staff, and everyone else that put in the enormous effort to make this happen. Now it's time to keep the conversations going!

I'm often told by friends and colleagues — those within the region and established expats – that we need to 'shout about' our North East more and that we're not that great at doing so. The conversation cropped up again this month's inaugural BUSINESSiQ North East Impact event at the fabulous Hopetown Darlington. Panelists including Teesside International Airport's Phil Forster and The North East Combined Authority's portfolio holder for Culture, Creative, Tourism and Sport, Amanda Hopgood, both told a packed audience that we need to 'shout about' what's going on up here. Of course they're right. But I've always been of the opinion that, as proud North Easterners we're actually very good at shouting about what's great in our region. As a community, we're fantastic narrators and our stories are underpinned by an in-built passion and self-belief. The bigger problem in 2024 (or almost 2025)? Where do we tell those stories? The decline of quality local and regional media means there are fewer and fewer opportunities to reach the people who matter. Platforms for engaging storytelling are disappearing daily. The trusted voices keen to shout about our amazing region suddenly have nowhere to go. If we want to celebrate what's unique, exciting and optimistic about the North East — and of course we do — then how do we go about it? How do we spread the word and celebrate the wins? Shouting about our region really isn't a problem. It's just becoming increasingly difficult knowing where best to amplify our biggest wins. Feel free to point me in the right direction...

I came across Doreen Baingana's short story 'Gorging' last week & it reminded me of the many days and weeks I have spent at conferences and workshops, with nights in hotel rooms and bars. But it also reminded me of the few stories that exist out there of the world I find myself in (International Development/Humanitarian Sector). People here like to write with technical vocabulary about other people but rarely themselves. So stories like this are needed, urgently. Do you know more stories or books which use the development/humanitarian sector (staff) as their main subject? https://lnkd.in/dKh_kCsj

How cities can empower the association community There are many ways that the choice of host destination can support international association events.
